Face it, sometimes the best thing about going out to a movie is the popcorn, those big plump kernels that always seem so much better than what you pop at home. But this simple stovetop popper changes all that. It really does make awesome, fresh-popped corn that might make you start renting videos instead. The sturdy aluminum pan has a clip-on lid with a stay-cool wooden handle. A turn crank on the handle spins the key element: the stainless steel stirring system that keeps the corn moving across the bottom of the pan, for even heat and oil distribution, ensuring the best popping results. The lid has steam vents, to help keep the popcorn dry and crisp. The enclosed booklet is a wonderful resource, with not only clear and detailed instructions, but also dozens of recipes and popcorn history and lore. These are folks who really do know their popcorn, and the results are outstanding. --Cynthia Nims

I wrote off Whirly Pop as a possibility for me mainly because my cooking surface is induction and it simply would not work. Also, I thought the plastic gears and function SEEMED a little on the cheap/poor quality side WITH THE AMOUNT I use it. The Whirley Pop is a great popper and is perfect for most home users. I do not insinuate the plastic mechanism does not function well.
I just came back in the market for a new popper since my small commercial popper died. My research for a new popper revealed the Stainless Steal model of Whirley Pop. I had no idea they made one. This is THE BEST of THE BEST - even if you do not have an induction cooktop. It will work with any method and I imagine is pretty awesome on gas. The quality is top notch and the look and feel are great - but do those extra perks really matter? Not at the end of the day. They are just great perks and well loved ones at that.
What really matters is the popcorn. I have never had a popper that I love as much as this one. It's use is just as customizable as the connoisseurs that use it. It is awesome!
The bottom line is that it is the BEST corn popper on the market for home use (and even for commercial use I imagine if you have an available heat source). The clean up is so easy and the popcorn is perfection. Thank You Wabash Valley Farms for upgrading your amazing corn popper.
I did have to modify the lid: it doesn't lift up all the way, and it was difficult to pour out the roasted coffee (I imagine it would be even harder to pour out popcorn). I took a Dremel tool and lengthen the groove that slips around the base of the cranking mechanism where it goes through the lid. It is still a bit tricky getting the coffee out because it has to be done quickly; I am still getting used to it!
For roasting, I use about a pound and a half (715 grams) of green beans, and end up with about 1.15# of a nice, medium-dark roast. I roast over 100 pounds of coffee a year. I hope this "roaster" lasts me another ten years!!
Having the aluminum model side by side confirmed that the clips on the steel lid aren’t deformed, and simply can’t hold the pan’s weight as designed.
You can test what I’m talking about on any model (aluminum included) by holding the kettle down at the rim outside the lid—watch your fingers though—while twisting the wooden handle in the direction you’d flip the pan. Mine pops off without too much force as the rim rotates out of the clip—less force than the clips try to support when you quickly flip a full steel kettle and empty out corn. The aluminum model will also pop off with similar force but it’s so much lighter it doesn’t reach that failure point. The steel model is a dangerous mis-design in this regard.
I “upgraded” to the all-stainless steel model after my original aluminum one was damaged. I’ve used it twice now. The first time, the top popped off the pot and dumped popcorn (and a hot pan) all over the floor when I tried to flip it.
The second time, I checked it as closely as I could to make the lid secure, double, triple checked, pulled upwards on the handle, etc. Flipped it to test and bam, lid popped off and pan hits the floor. At least it was cold and empty this time.
This thing is freaking heavy, and the tension method they use to secure it just isn’t up to the task. I’ve got it mostly secure after bending the clips on the lid a little more but truth is I don’t trust the apparatus anymore. I was genuinely scared trying to shake popcorn out of it today after it popped up. Now that I’ve bounced the pot off the floor a couple of times I’m not comfortable returning it, but I’m not comfortable using it either.
And just to add insult to injury, it doesn’t make a better pot of popcorn, it makes a worse one. It pops more slowly, and tends to burn in the bottom when the disc retains heat. It also takes longer to flip, and is super-error prone to grip especially with sweaty or oily hands.
A side handle would fix all of the problems, but the current method of flipping a heavy stainless pot with a thick induction disc at the very bottom by twisting a slippery wooden handle at the very top—and then supporting the entire thing off-vertical by a *clip-on lid* that’s prone to scooting sideways on the rim and detaching? Yeah, that’s both a mouthful and a borderline negligent design. What works for aluminum doesn’t work for steel, Wabash.
I’m extremely sorry I bought this. I’m going to look for a model with more secure fastenings on the top and go back to a lighter aluminum pot before I burn the crap out of myself or dent my kitchen further.
I have used this popcorn popper about 5 times.
I was happy at the beginning, then the popcorn started to taste very weird. I took a close look at the bottom of the pot, and used paper towl to clean the bottom. The coating comes off, the aluminum goes right into your popcorn. Look at the pictures I have attached, look at the papertowel, the grey stain, after I popped some popcorn, and the weird discoloration on the bottom of the pot.
Do you think this is safe? I don't. I put this otem in the trash and regret having spent money on this product.
