I thought the pry bar portion of the butt end was also gimmicky and wouldn't serve for much, other than snagging things. I haven't really experienced that with it, but found it to be nice to maintain grip. The pry bar portion makes it easier to grip and remove from the sheath.
I have always liked the idea of the survival knives that had the handles that could store small survival items like fishing line and hooks, matches, etc. but they never seemed to be great of quality and I never wanted to sacrafice having a full tang blade. The hollow portions of the micarta scales give you the best of both worlds with no sacrafice.
I own and lot of different knives that I've collected looking for one like this and overall, I find this knife to be an ideal choice for an EDC style survival knife. It's big enough without being too big and it is a very high quality blade.
The coating on the blade is a little thick, and it hinders its ability to make a clean slice, and the pry bar at the end of the pommel is quite sharp and can poke you in the side. Both were easily fixed with a little grinding and some citristrip.
This knife take a wicked edge quite easily from an Arkansas stone, and holds it extremely well. The canvas mircate in the scales make for a sure grip, and add more traction when wet. The thick 1095 blade is unstoppable. I've used and abused it as a pry bar, pommel and blade, and it refuses to bend or break.
The DeSantis sheath is great. The tension is adjustable, and the molle straps are very convenient. They strap directly to my vest for work, and when off duty the blade holds firmly at the back of my belt under my shirt with the straps open and cross buttoned.
