Originals, The: Season One(Blu-ray+DVD+UltraViolet)

This sexy and thrilling new series from The Vampire Diaries' executive producer centers on the Original vampire family and the dangerous vampire/werewolf hybrid, Klaus (Joseph Morgan), who returns to the magical melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans - a town he helped build centuries ago. Acting on a mysterious tip that a plot is brewing against him, Klaus' questions lead him to his diabolical former protégé, Marcel (Charles Michael Davis), a charismatic vampire with total control over the human and supernatural inhabitants of the city. Determined to help his brother Klaus find redemption, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) follows Klaus and is soon forced to side with Marcel's enemies. Meanwhile, Klaus and Elijah's sister, Rebekah (Claire Holt), must decide if she'll join her brothers in New Orleans and help them to reclaim their hometown and all its extraordinary offerings. Phoebe Tonkin also stars, among others.

I also have never written a review until I watched the pilot episode of The Originals because that is how amazing this show is and want everyone to know about it. This show has great acting, drama and the characters just draw you in. I love vampire movies and shows but Joseph Morgans character Klaus is if not the best but one one of the best vampire characters I have ever seen. This show has class and elegance everything that vampire diaries does not have with all the soap opera drama between Damon, Stefan and Elena which everyone is growing tired of. This is the show I and many others have been waiting for. I hope it goes on for years to come. Amazing must watch!!!

I'm not usually into vampire stories, mostly because they're either too gooey with high school nonsense, or they are all action packed and full of gore. I am into none of those things. (Side note: The witches out-gross the vampires in this show. Just an FYI.)

But lucky for me, that is not the case with The Originals. Even though some of these elements are present, they are in reduced form, and are not as overt as in other vampire stories. Yes, it can get a bit bloody, but it is manageable in that you can look away for a few seconds here and there if you so choose and NOT miss the entire episode in doing so.

I find the characters to be psychologically interesting and compelling (no pun intended), and especially those of Niklaus and Elijah and their relationship as brothers. It's an interesting concept to me to explore a being who is over 1,000 years old and has done a lot of living, and the effects that would/could have on the choices that they make (and why), their psyche, and their emotional well being. This concept is what usually causes me to give vampire stories a chance. Not any of the blood stuff. Yes, the Originals are powerful, but it's what they choose to do (or not to do) with that power that interests me.

Visually, the show is good, the colors, the sets, the costumes, and indeed most of the people. I found the casting to have been done really well in this department. As mentioned above, I dislike the high school vibe, and visually, The Originals avoided that and because of this I feel like I am watching adults, and not children. It lends a maturity to the show which I do appreciate.

I must also mention that I think that the soundtrack/music is REALLY well done. I have even purchased two or so tracks used in season 1. No regrets.

When I first started watching The Originals (after having watched all episodes to date of The Vampire Diaries), my first question was: how did they go about writing a coinciding storyline to a TV show that already exists without interrupting or creating discrepancies with the narrative of The Vampire Diaries? But with the first episode, I was not only impressed with the depth of the narrative itself, but also by the quality in which they produced this series, which, in some ways exceeds the production of the original show. Behind The Originals are some truly gifted writers who have carefully orchestrated an intriguing and captivating narrative that not only does not interrupt or take away from The Vampire Diaries, but adds to it by grounding it with a meta-narrative that encompasses the vast and convoluted world that is The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Perhaps given a closer look, some clever audiences may be able to find problems in continuity or maybe even contradictory elements in this series. But so far I have thoroughly enjoyed what other spinoffs are rarely capable of doing: creating a series that is self-sustaining in itself and widens the perspective of the characters and the world they inhabit that we have grown so much to love.

Best show I've seen in a very long time. The story line is awesome. Not like the stupid tween type vampire shows, this show has depths.

Excellent spin-off from an excellent show. And Joseph Morgan is HOT. Come for the blood and Gore, stay for the untouchable mortal hunk and his surprisingly normal 1000 year old brother Elijah, also a hottie btw
