I had to stop reading this book at page 16. In the first 16 pages the word terrorist is used numerous times. The term fixation comes to mind. Those who refer to Irish Republicans as terrorist have not educated themselves as to why Republicans over the years have had to resort to armed struggle. And have probably never aligned themselves with a group of oppressed people or bothered to study the effects of prolonged oppression.
During WWII, Germany invaded and took control of France. The French fought back. During WWII Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. The Americans fought back. During WWII England was bombed by Germany. The English fought back. These are just a few recent examples of people defending their homelands. Does Mr Morrison refer to the French, Americans and English as terrorist?
The English have a seemingly ingrained imperialistic belief and stance that they have every right to take possession of any country and claim it as their colony/possession all in the name of expanding the UK domain. And when the populaces stand up for themselves, they are brutally quashed and referred to as terrorists.
Possibly Mr Morrison is aware of this British imperialistic oppression and still considers Irish bravery and resolve as terrorism, so be it. Mr Morrison’s inability to complete a paragraph without referring to Irish Republicans as terrorists has sullied what I imagine is a well-researched and well written analysis of dissident groups. Speaking of which, this book is an analysis of the splits and fractures in the Republican movement which resulted in the formation of dissident groups. It is not an analysis of the strategies and tactics of the IRA. There is nothing wrong with Mr Morrison stating his opinion of the IRA and its actions. State your opinion and then move on to the research and purpose of your work.
I had previously read “Legions of the Rear Guard, Dissident Irish Republicanism” Martyn Frampton, Irish Academic Press, 2011. A great book which I highly recommend. See my review of this book on Amazon. Unfortunately, due to his fixation I cannot recommend Mr Morrison’s book.
