would switch between several high end brands to provide variety. (Never could fathom the veterinary dogma that they have to be
keep on one food type, as my dogs have feasted on deer and cat feces whenever possible with no evident GI distress.) Then read the
reviews on Orijen and gave it a try. My two older dogs, in general, look good for their age. But, within 6 weeks, I noticed my bernese's coat is far more lustrous, her eye's clearer and brighter, just an overall look of improved well being. Same for my fecal feasting old labrador.
I have never seen such a dramatic effect with any other dog food. I also switched my sweet old blind amputee (bone cancer) kitty
to the feline version, same effect. He's sixteen years old. His coat is fuller, glossier. He looks better than he has in the past two years.
The additional you spend on food will likely save you far more in vet bills. I am an ER physician, not a veterinarian, but I can
tell when a mammal (human or otherwise) looks like he/she feels better. This is wonderful stuff.
I have a 9 year old pitbull, 42 lbs and the love of our lives. She's my running buddy, but she has always been picky and I worry about her getting the right nutrition. She has arthritis that the vet says is compensated for through her muscle mass, so I wanted to make sure she could maintain her muscular structure. It seems like its taking her longer to recover, which is to be expected with age, but I worry about her burning through her muscle. As she ages, I know her needs change, but its hard to know what she needs and what is best. I just don't trust marketing. At her yearly exam the vet recommended that we start her on a senior diet, and so we decided to try. She refused to even touch the Purina Pro Plan Senior. My fiance insisted that if she was hungry enough, she would try it. Nope. She refused, and I am not one to wait her out. (Life is too short, and I want her to be happy. If she hates it that much, why force it on her?) So, at that point, this food was recommended to me by my mother, but good lord, the price!
In the mean time, my parents have a 12 year old weimaraner who almost died this past Christmas. He had a pinched nerve and needed to lose weight, but in the mean time, he was placed on a steroid for the pain. The steroid caused a massive ulcer and he almost bled to death. Our vet stuck by him and he's here today. After that my mom put him on the Orijen. He lost about 20% of his body weight, his eyes are clear and bright, his coat is silky and soft, he has way more energy and his bad days, while not gone, are fewer and farther between. Seeing how far he came, I decided to pay the price for my girl.
She actually eats this food. She is excited for food time. She was always a grazer but suddenly, she scarfs down her food. She has become completely regular. She drinks more water, and has more energy (though she was fairly high energy before). Her coat is no longer dull with a lot of shed. She is sleek and soft and her eyes are bright. She moves well and recovers quickly from the runs. Her joints do not seem to bother her as much as in the past. Her breath is better and she's less gassy. No weight loss, but that was not our goal for her. So now she's a healthy eater on a senior food. While not as pronounced in her since she was not as bad as my parent's senior, she is younger and her days are not as hard. It was a worthwile investment.
I love this food and was buying it consistently when everyone here locally quit carrying it. Image my relief to find Amazon carried the product and I was able to have the convenience of it being shipped to my door.
