Orijen Senior Dog Food is now an 75/25 formula! Meaning that 75% of each bag is meat and 25% is other essential ingredients. Orijen has still kept all their core concepts of Grain free, high quality natural ingredients and only using free range proteins. This new formula is an overall improvement to the old (70/30) formula. The first 5 ingredients are now fresh (never frozen) meats, perfect proportions of nutrients and the over-all taste and digestibility is improved. Orijen products are made in small batches from ingredients that are natural and about half of the ingredients arrive fresh each day. Orijen does not use chemical preservatives or artificial coloring. The amount of fresh meat that is used, give the kibble a unique shape, smell and color. There are added protein sources to each formula to give more taste and nutrients to the formulas. Fresh meats are low in calcium and phosphorus, which helps make each formula balanced.

My dogs were on Blue Buffalo Wilderness Salmon before Orijen. Nothing was wrong with previous food. Reason why i wanted to try out Orijen senior is cuz it seemed like human grade ingredient quality compared to all other premium dog food. Plus it has tad little more protein, little less fat and about same carb than Blue Buffalo Wilderness, but most importantly, seemingly better quality. At first I was hesitant (besides expensive price..), because I kept reading and hearing mixed things about High Protein for dogs and kidney problem for espcially senior dogs. I ultimately found out that what dogs need is High QUALITY protein, not just 'high' protein. And even high protein won't normally cause issue for regular healthy senior dogs generally. If your dog already has kidney issue or other underlying problems, then you have to be careful and regulate accordingly as it can be aggravated. Long story short, I've concluded for MY dogs (every dog is so different) i'm going to try even higher quality/portion protein diet than blue buffalo, which came down to Orijen. If you're switching from low-mid protein to high protein diet such as orijen, i think you should switch out food much more gradual and longer than instructed by manufacturer. My dogs were already on high protein Blue Buffalo, so it wasn't big deal to switch out with orijen to its standard instruction. Not all dogs are able to handle high protein i think, and unfortunately it's basically 'trial and error' with our beloved pooch's diet.. All we can base our knowledge on dog food is just from personal experience and some studies done by other companies and labs without much solid conclusions, and rather their 'suggestion or tendencies'. :( Also, I am not much of believer about feeding dogs like how wild wolves eat. I am believer of balanced fresh quality meal. Plus wild wolves have a lot less life expectancy than domesticated dogs, and dogs have adapted to living with human and eating food given by human. At the end of the day, dogs are happy whatever you give them... But i just want to do my best and try to keep them healthy and live a long time!
Anyhow, One of my dogs has a lot of age related skin issues (she is Beagle+Italian Greyhound). She has a lot of papillomas developing past 2 years and I was told it's just due to age and immune system. She recently had gone through some surgery and we had a lot of papillomas removed since she was already under anesthesia. But few new papilloas started developing right away and rapidly. Most of her past papillomas never really reduced in size, just a tad maybe. Well, within a week of starting Orijen diet, all of her papillomas started reducing in size significantly!! I was so surprised. Also, her already ultra soft coat became..super duper ultra softer. My another dog (Border Collie + Labrador) always had semi-soft/rough coat, and her coat has become soooo silky soft after starting orijen. They love the food so much. Kibbles are soft and easily breakable, which i like for my senior pooches.
So far, I am happy with what Orijen food is doing for my dogs. My two dogs each have different problems of their own. Beagle mix (11 years old) has lots of skin issues, lipomas, but sturdy stomach and healthy internally. Border Collie mix (8 years old) has extremely sensitive stomach and a lot of allergies, she is the actual reason why i started switching out to premium food awhile ago due to her stomach. They are both high energy dogs. I had my share of trial and error, and for all i know I may be switching food for them again due to some other reasons in the future (like new allergy or something). But as of the moment, it's been 1 month since i switched the food and both dogs seem healthier, shinier, better than ever before.
