I bought these knowing I was making a mistake. I thought "Here's another kitchen gadget that I'll never use." But I've wanted to move toward steaming, so I thought I'd give them a try.

The day they arrived I had a chicken breast thawing in the fridge. I washed a steamer and sprayed it with olive oil (per the directions,) threw a few asparagus on the bottom, then added the chicken breast and gave it a quick shot of olive oil spray. On a whim, I cut up some papaya and mango and layered the slices on top of the chicken breast. I put it in the microwave for three minutes.

After three minutes I pulled it out and checked the chicken temperature. It wasn't quite done, so I put it back for another 30 seconds. I checked again--perfect. (If you don't have a meat thermometer, I use this one and like it a lot: Taylor Waterproof Digital Thermometer.)

The flavor was amazing. Everything was cooked perfectly. Nothing scorched or was undercooked. The chicken was tender and moist and worked well with the fruits, and the asparagus had wonderful flavor and kept its appealing green color. It took about five minutes of washing and cutting and three and a half minutes of cooking. I had a really good dinner in less than 10 minutes.

Clean up was incredibly easy. There was no greasy mess to clean, so a quick hand-wash of the steamer and I was done.

Since it's a 12-ounce container, it also does a good job of keeping me from preparing too much food when I'm hungry. Most days I end up squishing the food down a little to get the lid to seal, because my eyes are bigger than the steamer.

Very nice product. I am surprised by the speed with which it steams fresh cut up vegetables. Carrots in about 3 minutes; very tender and keeps their flavor. Green vegetables have also worked well. You shouldn't over cook them though. Excellent pricing from Amazon; better than other internet facilities.

Having been a range cook most of my years, I limited my microwaving for consumer fears of radiation and loss of vitamins that have been published about microwave cooking. Within the last 10 years, I've learned that I can steam my food using the microwave and cut my time and worries about microwaving. These silicone steamers steam my food very quickly. Just a very small amount of water in the container will do most jobs in just a few minutes, however, I try to use standing time to my advantage.

The key to healthy steaming is to use the residual heat and not rely on the microwaves to cook the food. The idea is to heat the water and then let the food sit (covered) while the steam penetrates the food. Cutting vegetables into small pieces or thin slices helps reduce the cooking time by allowing the steam to saturate the food. A cup of vegetables can be ready in 2 minutes or less.

Steaming is acclaimed to be one of the most preferred methods of healthy cooking. To my understanding, microwave radiation is known to dissipate within a short distance, so harmful effects shouldn't be a major concern unless you stand right next to the oven when cooking. I'm not an expert, however, so I certainly welcome any feedback from credible science authorities out there. Many restaurants, today, have microwaves in use and health concerns have not been an issue to my knowledge, except for pace-maker recipients. Bottom-line, I love using these steamers and have made several purchases to keep them handy. Clean-up is easy since food doesn't typically stick to the silicone. Orka is my favorite brand as I have found them quality-made and durable providing appropriate utensils are used that won't cut into the silicone. I have been very pleased with my Orka steamers and I believe you will, too.

I own a set of these and they are wonderful! Food cooks fast without added fat or mess. Clean up couldn't be simpler, I just wash them with soapy water and they're ready to go again.

My only complaint is that the 12oz size is not enough for a whole meal for me. I primarily use them to steam meat & slice baby red potatoes in one, and fresh vegetables in the other. I'd prefer a bigger size that I could steam my whole meal in but that's a minor complaint. I steam a piece of frozen salmon and two sliced baby reds takes about 4 minutes, and then I fill the other with fresh brocolli and baby carrots and 3.5 minutes later, I'm eating a wonderful, heathy dinner in less time than it takes to microwave a frozen meal full of chemicals.

Buy the 20oz or 27oz size, you won't be sorry!

I was skeptical about silicone. I'm a believer now. These are easy to clean, cook evenly and are always easy to handle (don't get super hot in the microwave). I recommend this type of cookware to anyone who likes fast cooking/microwave, unique cookware.
