With a very focused story of the Orkney islands in the great Scandinavian tradition, this book is fascinating. Reads from sweeping to detailed like many sagas, but a excellent insight into the Norse history and culture of Scotland's fringe islands and coasts. Also interesting comments on other historical happenings nearby. A treasure!

This is a marvelous book. I bought it to find out more about the people involved there during Viking times. I found all I wanted to know about that, plus I found a very interesting and entertaining read. The information contained in this saga is priceless.

To anyone who has read books like the Iliad
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 10, 2018Verified Purchase
I found this extremely interesting. To anyone who has read books like the Iliad, I can't recommend these Sagas enough. They often get over looked in favour of the Greek works. There are some interesting accounts such as the Orkney Earl who used treachery to kill a Scottish rival (I won't spoil it) and the tale of the Orkney Raven Banner. The last one is my favourite as Orkney's own Land Waster turns out to be a mixed blessing in battle. The translation is easy to read and really portrayed the time to me making the book extremely immersive. In fact I lost myself in it and finished it far too quickly.
Shame there won't be a sequel. ;)

Little bit disappointed with the quality/condition of the book but love the stories. Recently visited Orkney again so will love to read about all the places I've been.
