The six Welles films that Rasmussen covers are: Citizen Kane, Magnificent Ambersons, Lady from Shanghai, Touch of Evil, The Trial and Chimes at Midnight. A very impressive collection! I've read the chapters on Kane (which he identifies as his favorite movie) and Ambersons in the course of studying these two films and found his close analysis, scene by scene, to be consistently stimulating and useful. If and when I re-watch the other four I will certainly make use of it again. Of course, there are times when I don't agree with his points, but that adds to the stimulation. (And Welles liked the notion of his films being rich and complex and open to many interpretations, many reactions.)
I was sorry to find that despite applying himself so conscientiously to these six exemplary movies, directed by a master of the medium, Rasmussen offers next to no overview of Welles' craft and genius and concerns, as an introduction or in conclusion.
The book is well written. Highly recommended.
