Written by a miracle-worker of modern times who was in close spiritual contact with the Mother of God - St. John Maximovitch, Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco (1896-1966) - this work was translated by an American convert to the Orthodox Faith who was a beloved disciple of St. John: Hieromonk Seraphim Rose of Platina (1934-1982).

Transitioning from traditional Catholic to Orthodox, I find this a very readable and helpful short book about the Mother of God and Orthodoxy. Easier for me since I already have Mary in my prayer and faith life, but for transitioning protestants and other faiths who do not venerate Mary, this also is a fairly good primer, reading one or two pages at a time. Gives an overall historical and faith picture, without overwhelming theology. Respects the reader no matter where the reader is coming from.

As a convert to Orthodoxy from Protestatism, I found this book to be very helpful. I believe it would be the same for Roman Catholic converts as well. St. John takes a very balanced approach that I believe is the truth. The Protestants completely neglect Mary, the Theotokos, while Roman Catholics can elevate her too high as a co-redeemer with an immaculate conception. I would definitely recommend this to converts, people who are inquiring into the Orthodox faith, or someone who simply wishes to understand why the Orthodox display such reverence for the Mother of God.

St. John writes as a son defending the honor of his mother; the mother of all Christians.

It is more difficult to understand the Mother of God as she said very little except that her "yes" to God allowed everything there is in the birth of her Holy Son. This book really reviews how to think of her, and helps if one has a "blank" thought of the Holy Virgin in attempts to grow in prayer, as opposed to the filled-in thoughts of her Son Our Lord Jesus Christ. This book helps much in worship, in asking for her intercessions, as the loving constantly- praying-for-the-world-and individuals ---- Holy Mother of God...
