Claus Jungeblut, M.D., prevented and treated polio in the mid-1930s, using a vitamin. Chest specialist Frederick Klenner, M.D., was curing multiple sclerosis and polio back in the 1940s, also using vitamins. William Kaufman, M.D., cured arthritis, also in the 1940s. In the 1950s, Drs. Wilfrid and Evan Shute were curing various forms of cardiovascular disease with a vitamin. At the same time, psychiatrist Abram Hoffer was using niacin to cure schizophrenia, psychosis, and depression. In the 1960s, Robert Cathcart, M.D., cured influenza, pneumonia, and hepatitis. In the 1970s, Hugh D. Riordan, M.D., was obtaining cures of cancer with intravenous vitamin C. Dr. Harold Foster and colleagues arrested and reversed full-blown AIDS with nutrient therapy, and in just the last few years, Atsuo Yanagasawa, M.D., Ph.D., has shown that vitamin therapy can prevent and reverse sickness caused by exposure to nuclear radiation. Since 1968, much of this research has been published in the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine. This book brings forward important material selected from over forty-five years of JOM directly to the reader.
At some 800 pages, The Orthomolecular Treatment of Chronic Disease is a very large book, but it is also a very practical book. If you want to know which illnesses best respond to nutrition therapy, and how and why that therapy works, this is the book for you. Part One presents the principles of orthomolecular medicine and the science behind them. Part Two is devoted to orthomolecular pioneers, presenting an introduction to maverick doctors and nutrition scientists in a reader-friendly way that brings the subject to life. Part Three brings together extraordinary clinical and experimental evidence from expert researchers and clinicians.
The Orthomolecular Treatment of Chronic Disease shows exactly how innovative physicians have gotten outstanding results with high-dose nutrient therapy. Their work is here for you to see and decide for yourself.
The Orthomolecular Treatment of Chronic Disease, subtitled "65 Experts on Therapeutic and Preventive Nutrition," is a complete course in nutritional healing for less than thirty dollars.

"The Orthomolecular Treatment of Chronic Disease sounds like a book you would take to school. It's not. It's easy to read and easy to follow. It's the most terrific book out there. It talks about key people who, over the last 80 years, have had success curing illnesses with vitamins."

Andrew Saul's 800 page compilation on the treatment of chronic disease with therapeutic amounts of substances naturally occurring in the human body ( such as minerals, vitamins, co factors ) should be enough to convince any open minded person that this approach should be tried ahead of any pharmaceutical approach to the treatment of chronic disease. The book is organized into three sections: Foundations of Orthomolecular therapy ( 130 pages ) Pioneers or Orthomolecular Medicine ( 43 pages ) and about 600 pages dealing with the specifics of treatment of Alcoholism, Alzheimer's Disease, Cancer, Depression and Anxiety, Drug Addictions, Eye Diseases. Fatigue, HIV/Aids, Hyperactivity , Radiation Sickness, Schizophrenia and Psychosis.
In Part one and part three is a compilation of short articles written by specialists within the field, and edited by the author. Because of this format the reader will come across some duplication of facts, but these tend to reinforce the learning of the non professional reader. The style of writing is accessible, though written at level that will engage the health care provider. Many of the case histories where details of protocol that could only be used by a doctor are probably not that helpful to the average reader, other than to convince him that important therapies can be achieve through this approach. Hopefully, the detailed discussions of case histories will convince some independent doctors to offer some of these therapies to their patients.
This book gives no guidance in the use of herbs to heal.
I was at first disappointed to see no discussion of liposomal vitamin C. However the authors colleagues have provided a good summary in their discussion as to how vitamin c and its potential to help people recover from the Ebola virus. see: http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v10n13.shtml
I suggest first reading Orthomolecular Medicine for Everyone by PHD/MD Abram Hoffer, which is probably still the best book on Orthomolecular medicine. If you were hoping for an updated version to that outstanding book, this is not it. Unfortunately its missing treatments for many major diseases like Crohn's, and the total picture on type 2 diabetes, alzheimers. I suppose as it takes a long time to conduct the RCT and get it published. So if you're looking for cutting edge information this book is missing a lot.
I highlight some of the major disappointments
It does not cover the importance of Serrapeptase (enzyme of a silk worm), which maybe as important substance as Niacin at treating inflammation, heart disease, and in treating alzheimers. Serrapeptase plus nattokinase has been shown to reverse Alzheimers in 100 % in
one rat. It does not incorporate Hoffer's extensive work on Alzhemiers and Dementia either. Hoffer/Walkers book 'smart nutrients' is still
probably the best guide. Nattokinase is another major orthomolecular substances like niacine, taurine, for the heart that should have been covered.
It misses many of the modern smart nutrients for mental/brain health such as Lithium orotate, Saint Johns Wort, phosphatidylserine
It does not cover the importance and safety of high doses of vitamin D3 and K2 in treating Crohns, Luspus, MS, Cancer . See Jeff Bowles
books on Vitamin D3 and Dr. Zaidis.
It leaves out Linus Paulings/Hoffers epic trial of cancer, their work 'Healing Cancer', and is badly outdated compared to Russell Blaylocks book, Natural Healing Strategiesfor Cancer.
I think as far as diabetes it misses that most diabetes is caused by a deficiency in the trace minerals of vanadium, chromium, manganese,
and other vitamins and minerals. It does not cover the importance of japanese bitter melon extract either in getting blood sugar back to normal
quickly. Look at the supplements Doctors Choice for Diabetics, it has an almost perfect formulation of herbs, vitamins, minerals etc for diabetics.
If you have Crohn's there are four good natural treatments (plus Hoffers, Orthomolecular Nutrition).
1) Cannibis Oil (aka RSO, 90 grams over 120 days) see 'Run from the Cure ' on youtube
2) Low Dose Naltrexone Therapy (lowdosenaltrexone.org)
3) High Dose Vitamin D3/K2 therapy
4) Curcumen, and Aloe Vera AMP supplements
I'm very glad I purchased this but found very little that was on the cutting edge of orthomolecular treatment.
The Orthomolecular MDs really need to get together and write a book that gets updated every 2 years. No one has really picked the ball
up from where Hoffer left off, and carried it up field very far.
Sadly Pubmed is still necessary reading and the Journal of Orothomolecular Medicine.
Top reviews from other countries
It tries to approach conditions from the cause rather than the symptoms, unlike the approach of general medicine which tends to concentrate on the symptoms with a separate pharmaceutical for each symptom (and possibly further pharmaceuticals to treat the side effects of the first ones).
It is jam-packed full of information - not a book you would really want to sit down and try to read from cover to cover (it is a very large book) but more a reference text for you to read up on areas of interest at any one particular time.
There is lots of science in it - just read the passage through several times and maybe search on Google if there are words you don't know. The most important bits are what to try - try and see if the suggestions work, maybe trying just one thing at once (keeping a good diary of symptoms) so you can be sure of the effect. Obviously don't stop existing medications unless you are really sure you can do this, but if your symptoms improve your doctor will probably reduce those medications anyway. NB it is really important not to stop most pharmaceuticals "cold turkey" as that could have unpredictable effects, as your body may have adjusted to them and need a period to adjust back - it is always best to phase things out gradually.
The size of the book just about floored me.
This book is really more for the osteopath and naturopath rather than the ordinary lay man searching for help when it comes to natural medicine
