Identicication of Pathological Conditions in Human Skeletal Remains provides an integrated and comprehensive overview of pathological conditions that affect the human skeleton. The primary objective is to assist those who conduct research on archeological skeletal remains in interpreting abnormal conditions that they might encounter in the course of their research. However, there is much that ancient skeletal remains can reveal to the modern orthopedist, pathologist, forensic anthropologist, and radiologist about the skeletal manifestations of diseases that are rarely encountered in modern medical practice. The medical historian will find information on the antiquity and early geographical distribution of many diseases. All of the major categories of disease that affect bone are reviewed on the basis of the literature on the radiology and pathology of these diseases. This review is followed by a discussion of the literature on the paleopathological cases thought to represent each of the morbid categories affecting bone. This book is based on extensive individual and collaborative research by the author and contributing authors on the known parameters of basic calcified tissue biology and modern skeletal diseases and their expression in antiquity. The monograph provides essential text and illustrative materials on bone pathology, which will improve the diagnostic ability of those interested in human dry bone pathology. It also provides time depth to our understanding of the effect of disease on past human populations.

Awful print quality

A good revision to THE essential skeletal pathology book, but the printing leaves so much to be desired. Hard to make out features and details (and given this is a text concerning visual indicators, a downright head scratcher). I'm calling you out, Academic Press. Y'all did Ortner (RIP), Putschar (RIP), and Buikstra dirty on this one.

At first, I thought the publisher was just using flimsy paper because maybe it was recycled paper or something, but then I noticed the print quality was just generally not good. The photos are all too dark and basically useless for their intended purposes (to demonstrate pathological conditions in human skeletal remains), resembling a crappy xerox copy. Also, the thin paper means highlights/ink will bleed through to the other side, making it not ideal for a reference textbook. I wish the publisher would do a re-print because this is too expensive a book to have it be such terrible quality.

Like the others who reviewed this, it's great to have an update on Ortner's classic but the image quality is an insult to earlier editions that are seminal to the field. I can't image what the publishers were thinking, especially at this cost. The images look like poor quality photocopies. So unfortunate. A waste of such time and effort by so many experts trying to carry on Ortner's legacy. I'll use the text from this edition and refer to images from the 2nd.

Essential text, but what is going on with the printing?

I just received this book yesterday and it looks like there is an issue with the print quality. From my brief skim through, the updated text is awesome, but the print quality is definitely lacking. I am returning this book to Amazon and then repurchasing it directly from the publisher just in case the Amazon book is somehow a fake copy. I'm not sure why this would be, but who knows? I have attached two pictures to this review to show the difference in quality. In both pictures, the second edition is on the top (black ink) and the third edition (gray'ish ink) is on the bottom.

I just received this book with much anticipation because I have the first and second editions. This is NOT Dr. Buikstra’s fault, but Academic Press (Elsevier) printed it on such low quality paper that the photographs are HORRIBLE! Detail is entirely lacking, dark, and almost muddy-looking. I am VERY disappointed. The text is first-rate, as I would expect from Dr. Buikstra, but you buy a book like this with expectations of great photographs.

A must have paleopathology text... BUT

This book is an important update to the second edition of Ortner’s classic Identification of Pathological Conditions. This new edition highlights important methodological changes that have occurred in the field over the last 15 years and is an ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE for anyone interested in the study of paleopathology.

With that being said, the publisher sorely missed the mark by printing this in black and white. I have access to both the print and ebook (purchased by me, this is not a paid review) and the full colour ebook is of significantly higher quality when it comes to the all-important photographs. While not all of the photos in the ebook are full colour — many were originally taken in black and white — the publisher failed to perform even a basic photoshop job to change the colour photos into black and white photos prior to printing the physical book. This resulted in many muddy, dark, and low contrast photos where the pathology you’re supposed to see is barely discernible. I am also rather sad that the color differentiation of the in text citations did not make it into the printed volume. That is a particularly handy feature of the ebook and has helped me immensely in my research since I received it.
