My trusty analog Ortovox F1 transceiver, formerly the gold standard for avalanche rescue, had to be replaced. The new digital transceivers have a narrower bandwidth for receiving signals, and the F1 sending signal drifts when it is cold. Hence it could be possible that my backcountry ski buddies with digital transceivers would not be able to locate me. After talking to avalanche professionals and reading beaconreviews dot com, I chose the Ortovox 3+. It uses triple antennas (highly recommended) and is one of the smaller and lighter transceivers. Only one battery is needed, which makes the transceiver even lighter compared with transceivers that required three or four batteries (I always carry spare batteries and on multi-day trips I bring more than one change out).

This beacon's operation is intuitive. Right out of the box and before reading the instructions, I was able to turn it on, search, and find a transceiver that my spouse hid in the house.

The case has features that I like as well. The transceiver is attached with a sturdy elastic cord, which makes it easier to quickly pull the transceiver out from multiple layers of clothes and deploy without having to adjust the harness.

One feature I have mixed feelings about. After two minutes of no motion, the 3+ automatically reverts from search to send. This is in case I get buried by a new avalanche while searching for someone. I think that if avalanche conditions are that bad I would not be skiing there or taking the risk of searching for someone (that is a tough call but the first rule of rescue is to not create more victims).

I used it a few times with another burried beacon. Works much better than my old D3. When you are in a fine search the arrows disappear unlike my old D3. Still need more practice with it but it seems like a good buy.

used the same model last season for a weekend trip, decided to see how user friendly it was and tried it at the trials course at Valemount, and i found it was very responsive in notifying/ directing me to the buried beacons. In my mind this is the easiest unit i've ever used or been around.

My son is an avid snow skater. I hope he never has to use this, but just knowing he is carrying it when he is up on the mountain during the winter, is worth the money we spent buying it for him.

I tool an avie class and it found the buried transceivers. It is a little difficult to operate with ski gloves on but otherwise is fine. I do hope to never use it in a real situation!
