Instead of the term "entry level," we prefer to describe our new Encounter rod outfits as "affordable awesomeness." Built for the hardcore angler, yet priced with frugality in mind, the Encounter rod series combines state-of-the-art rod design with a smooth, crisp performancepackaged with a large arbor Encounter reel, weight-forward floating line, backing, and leader. The 9' 5-weight Encounter rod outfit is easily the best value-priced outfit of its kind. This is the perfect backup for an experienced traveling angler or for a new angler who plans to spend most of their time on bigger trout waters.

The reel is plastic, but still operates perfectly even after being completely submerged multiple times every time it's been out. The guides are still in good shape as well as the rod and cork. I've put some serious strain on the rod mostly trying to get my fly dislodged from rocks/brush, but also on some larger bass and freshwater drum and I'm confident in its durability at this point.
I have been bit by the fly fishing bug and my next purchase will be a high quality 8wt setup for inshore fishing and eventually a higher quality 4 or 5wt setup with a shorter rod for tighter creeks and I'm sure I will notice slight improvements in all aspects over the Encounter, with that being said the Encounter will always have a spot in my arsenal and if you're looking to get into fly fishing I highly recommend it.
Reel is serviceable, line is low-grade (began sinking within weeks even with regular cleaning) and rod is fragile. Orvis devalues their entire brand offering something like this...even refusing to stand behind it. A true Orvis rod and reel is worth the investment...this is not.
If you want to begin or return to fly fishing without a pretentious budget, save time and frustration: buy a Temple Forks Outfitter rod, a mid-range reel and string it with line from your local fly shop.

It is a little challenging to anchor the reel to the rod. The bottom of the reel stand sits off the rod and took some patience to get it to sit in both reel sets. That being said, the value of this overall package greatly outweighs this minor annoyance.
Absolutely recommend for anyone wanting to get into fly fishing.
