Update: a few months later and after becoming completely obsessed with osmo coding jam my daughter's now declared that osmo coding is for little kids and moved onto making scratch games! She always looked at scratch as something that was over her head, so I consider it a huge improvement.. even if she has actually lost interest in osmo for now. This was a great first step into coding!

I'll also add the following. She is a biologist and previously a PhD researcher, her husband is a doctor and her father in law who helped as the outlaws were visiting was a design engineer at BT at senior level before he retired. A clever bunch of people in other words.
This is the combined review of their efforts with 'The Bubs.'
I have to say we were completely underwhelmed by this kit. Once it comes out of the (oversized and over packaged) box, it’s apparent it costs £99 for a plastic stand, a plastic clip on mirror, and a set of plastic tiles. Which, seems an insane amount of money for what’s in the box.
Perhaps if you buy the coding add-on alone (with the stand and mirror starter kit) it’s better value. But, alone it seems hugely overpriced.
We used this with a Fire tablet which was incredibly clunky. Possibly with an iPad the user experience may be somewhat different but that seems unlikely.
It took a good thirty minutes to find, download the app, create an account , verify the account, set up a parent account, create a character and get going. Overly long and complicated.
In addition it always needs tapping twice to do any command. 3..2..1.... nothing, tap again. 3...2...1... and then it goes. It was just annoying.
My two six year old's were rather unimpressed and this held their attention for just one or two move combinations before leaving myself and Granddad to have further attempts.
I understand this is part of a bigger series of games and add ones and maybe the others make it more worthwhile although I can't understand how it could.
Currently I struggle to understand why you need the plastic tiles at all. The information is communicated via the mirror and tablet’s camera and I don’t see why these can’t simply be buttons within the game or app.
I can only assume that the tiles are useful for children who prefer or need to be hands on. My gut feeling is that these are just because it's something other companies such as Lego have done to 'engage' children.
I briefly looked at the shapes and words games. Again, I was a bit bamboozled about why the additional plastic pieces are necessary.
I may be missing the point entirely but it seems a bit waste of plastic and something additional to organise and store between play sessions.
Coding is usually all on screen and can be saved for further games but in practice does not seem to be the case.
The game maze/map does grow as the game progresses though.
Maybe this is aimed at more tech obsessed children or children who need ‘bits’ to build with rather than buttons.
Overall this was not well-suited to the Fire tablet and also didn’t capture my children’s interest whatsoever neither of whom are lower achievers.
The first picture is everything you got in the box.
The app and games are free to download.
