This has turned out to be a great bag. I have been trying to be more efficient at packing my carry-on and "personal item" for airline flights to avoid paying for checked baggage. This worked out to be exactly what I was looking for. It holds more stuff than you would think. I'm using packing cubes and have managed to bring everything I would need for my travel adventures. The compression straps are fantastic. Once I got everything packed the compression system cinched it down to a compact and sleek shape. It reduces the overall size of the bag and provide a little bit of rigid protection on the sides. The opening is large and things are easy to access. I don't have to dig very deep to find what I'm looking for. The backpack straps are comfortable. I've got the waist belt tucked away as it seems to get in the way more than it helps. It does not have many outside pockets but it has a couple and they are strategically placed. There are a few small mesh compartments inside but they are thin and up against a side wall. The handles are very comfortable. With the lack of wheels I have been able to carry it on to planes where they were asking all of the passengers to gate check their wheeled luggage. The ironic part is that this bag carries more stuff than the wheeled ones. I would definitely buy another one.

This is truly a great bag. I took it to Europe for a 5 week trip and it was perfect. I could fit everything I need in it and it fit in most airplane carry on bins. It has the perfect amount of compartments and is adjustable everywhere I needed it to be. I'm a 5'8" woman who weighs around 140, medium build. The shoulder straps were comfortable and adjustable, as was the lower belt. The handle is very strong and durable, the zipper never got caught or snagged. I can't say enough good things about this pack.

My wife and I each brought one of these on our 2 week, 4 country Europe trip last summer. This functioned as the only bag for the whole trip. With some packing cubes from another manufacturer, I was amazed how much this bag swallows. We had NO problems using them as carry-on bags, allowing us to keep ALL our stuff with us at all times. The bag functions very well as a back pack with the stowable waist and shoulder straps. Initially my wife wanted a bag with wheels (this adds weight) and a retractable pull-handle (this means a fram inside the bag which takes up space inside the bag), but once we were actually out of airports and hauling gear in/out of our car or in/out of B&B'S, or up stairs (very few elevators during our whole trip), it became very apparent that having wheels on the bag would only help for very short trips from the car to the door of a hotel/B&B/etc...not worth the extra cost or weight. With packing cubes (check out the Eagle Creek ones), organization is a breeze in this larger-than-expected bag. Access is better than most larger bags due to the large panel that basically zips the entire back of the bag open. A smaller top-access compartment and larger back-access compartment allow easy access to stuff you want to get to without actually vomiting the entire contents of one's bag across the floor of a train (camera, guidebook, light jacket, umbrella, etc). Inside the main compartment is a mesh-style compartment that runs the length, top-to-bottom, along one side, for odds & ends. I didn't really use this because I had the packing cubes.

Bottom line...if you want a do-it-all bag, and love the light-packing style, you will LOVE this bag. If you just want a good carry-on, but intend to also shlep bigger bags full of all your stuff, there are probably smaller, lighter, more useful bags for you. In other words, this is the perfect bag for the "Rick Steves, Europe The Back Door" crowd.

Our family of 4 (kids 10 and 14, parents) just returned from a 2 week trip to Mexico. Each of us had this pack. There was plenty of room for all of our gear and the packs fit easily into airline overhead bins. The pockets were easy to access. The pack itself is very light and easy to use. The padded grab handles were very helpful. It was also easy to lash a lightweight daypack onto the outside of the pack. We walked for up to an hour with very little fatigue. The pack has a trim profile that makes moving in crowds relatively comfortable. It's not a pack I'd want to take on long hikes, but for airline and bus travel it's great. Very highly recommended.

I purchased this backpack before a weekend trip across the country from Tennessee to California. I got the Porter 46 to replace my Transporter 46, which is the Porter 46's non-backpack, PITA-to-schlepp-through-a-big-airport cousin. I stuck with Osprey brand because my Transporter has held up very well, is well-built, and has a lifetime warranty.

First, the Porter 46 is quite roomy. For my trip, the bag carried a suit and dress shirt, two pairs of shoes, PJs, and 3 days of underwear and casual wear. I also had my security blanket, laptop + charger, 3 1" textbooks, a notebook, and toiletries. I also crammed in a Kelty hip pack that had food and electronics. Since that trip I've used it several times for weekend trips and can fill it with all the clothes I need plus 20-30lbs of tools.

The two handles on this bag are very comfortable and won't rub your hand raw if you choose to carry the bag rather than wear it. The backpack straps and hip strap are fairly comfortable--I wouldn't go hiking with this pack, but they are more than adequate for travelling (and they can be tucked away in the back panel). It fits just fine in an overhead bin. The gray sidewalls are stiff foam, which helps the Porter keep its shape and give it some protection from the savage baggage handlers. The two compression straps have clips to hold the loose end of the straps. There is a document pocket on the opening panel, as well as a pocket on the top of the bag, which is big enough to separate dirty or wet laundry, or a pair of shoes from the rest of the bag. There are 2 mesh pouches on the inside - one runs the length of the sidewall and one covers the inside of the opening panel.
