Product description
When you travel far and pack light, the Sojourn 45L/22” is the pack for the job. Already a great roller, the stowaway AG inspired backpack suspension expands your trips horizons. Built to fit most carry-on size requirements, you won’t have to wait at baggage claim before starting your adventure. Rolling luggage is great, but sometimes the terrain is too rough and you need a backpack. The Sojourn’s quick deploy AG inspired ventilated backpack suspension allows this and it carries more comfortably than some competitors backpacking packs. In rolling mode the dual-tube extended handle controls unwieldy loads when the going gets rough, and multiple padded and molded handles make it easy to maneuver this pack out of taxis or tuk-tuks. Extra gear can be strapped to the external daisy chains, or add on our Daylite® pack to added flexibility and storage. A top zippered liquids pocket, padded sidewalls, internal compression straps, fabric wings, and four zippered compartments keep your gear organized and protected. When the pack isn’t fully loaded, use the StraightJacket compression straps to cinch it down.Meets most carry on size restrictions for domestic airlines.

Pros:
Quality - Most robust wheeled convertible carry-on I’ve tried. Wheels, suspension, materials. Very nice.
Very comfortable backpack suspension. This is not a wheeled bag with straps on it. It’s more of a framed suspension pack with wheels.
Size – Pro and con here. It lets you pack a lot. It has interior compression straps and the exterior compression jacket. You can load this thing up. And with the robust wheels and the robust suspension moving it around is very easy. But on the flip size it can push the carry on limits. And optically it can look chubby which might create an issue on the more strict airlines. But if used as a domestic carry-on it’s fine.
Combo with the daylight daypacks – Yes the daylight daypacks are made to latch onto this Sojourn 45L as well. Both the tabs on the daylight and the over handle pass through on the top of the daylight when you are rolling the Sojurn. It’s like having a 65L Meridian without the zippers and a more comfortable daypack. Now with the Meridian I found that when the both bags were full it was tough to zip the daypack onto the main bag
Packing - Pro and con here, The Sojourn 45L is a big single open space pack. It has a few interior pockets on the sides and inside the front lid. But it does not have a dedicated laptop sleeve or external pocket. Unless you count the back panel if you remove the backpack straps. But there is a metal bar back there for the handle, so not sure I’d stick my laptop back there. Again if using a daypack, no biggie, but for a single bag solution you will need to be organized within the interior of the bag
Cons:
I think the cons come down to personal utility. If you are a person that fills whatever space you have to the max, then you run the risk of having to check this one on occasion or at least having to test it in the sizer.
Not having the external pockets or dedicated laptop space can be a little frustrating, but not all that uncommon. A daypack or an electronics organizer that you put in the main bag are simple solutions.
The Suspension system can be a little fiddle to pull out. You have to attach the load lifters and the straps clip into the hip belt. The hip belt portion straps to the bottom of the bag. So not really a quick conversion on the fly. It’s gonna take about a minute or so to do the whole transformation.
Quick comparisons:
Vs. the EC Lync 22 – The Sojourn is more robust and comfortable to use. It’s about ½ taller too and wider. The suspension on the EC Lync is OK. Not bad, but not as good as the Sojourn. The internal capacity is pretty close. But the EC Lync has a couple of external pockets that can be useful in a single bag solution. But the flip side, when using a daypack with a pass-through, the single handle on the EC Lync lets the pack flip and slide around. EC Lync is lighter and converts more quickly if you need to just throw it on your back real quick. I think the choice comes down to a few things to me, 1) if you are going to use the backpack for any extended period of time go with the Sojourn. If you think you might need the backpack straps for an occasion set of stairs, EC Lync might be better since its less fiddly to convert. 2) If you want more carry-on certainty, go with the EC Lync. It’s a little smaller and lighter. 3) If putting your personal item on top of your bag when you roll it matters, go with the Sojourn. The double handles make a difference.
vs. the Meridian or Ozone 22
Comparig the main bags here excludingthe daypack since you can use an existing daypack or buy the daylite for the Sojourn.
If max capacity matters more, I’d go with the Sojourn. If carry on certainty matters more I’d go with the Meridian or Ozone. I also think the Sojourn suspension is a little better as well so if you are going to use the backpack for longer stretches, consider that too. And as a general rule Osprey is more comfortable than the EC Lync.
So to test it out, I packed it full with bulky sweaters and two pairs of sneakers, cinched it as tight as I could, and then packed another Osprey day pack with light items, and attached it, because that was the plan—especially if I needed to check the sojourn on smaller European flights. Then I strapped the pair on my back and did a flight of stairs—and nearly fell backward. It was like I was carrying a small house with me. I’m a 5’6” female with a sturdy build. It held more than I thought, but I felt every pound of it.
The pack fit well with the hip belt suspension, but it was still too heavy and hard on my back. I’m not an avid hiker and can imagine that I would be wheeling this most of the time but would need to quickly pick it up and carry it on my back. That’s not really possible on the go, but it’s not too complicated to get the straps out and attached. You can also remove the hip belt, but it’s significantly less comfortable when you do, so I don’t recommend it.
I also put it side-by-side with an old square carryon that, when expanded, was flagged by domestic security last year and I had to compress it further. The osprey is wider and longer, so I’m not sure how it works as a carryon unless you are a light packer. And if you are a light packer, why wouldn’t you buy a smaller, lighter, less bulkier wheeled pack? I think it’s worth learning how to pack better.
My advice, if you don’t want to haul a heavy pack, is to try the Osprey Ozone convertible 50L/22” or even the cheaper Hypath Travel 2 in 1. I’m going to order those and see if Goldilocks can find the right travel combo. Or maybe I should hit the gym harder. I would try the Osprey Meridian, but it’s nearly 8.5 # and has a similar shape, and no hip belt, so I’m guessing I’ll run into similar problems.
Oh well, back to the drawing board...
I like that it has no big outside pockets which keeps snags to a minimum. Although a flat front pocket for passport and tickets would make it perfect.
I travel around the world and find my self off the grid and having the ability to convert to backpack is a must. It's not a spinner but that's a small tradeoff. This is a high quality perfect design
I chose this over the meridian model
