Update: After a month I am very happy with my rice cooker. I use it several times a week and never had any starchy mess spilling over. I've used the steamer alone to steam frozen roasted vegetable tamales and they turn out perfect. Cooking them in the microwave always made the edges crunchy or overcooked. You need 1 1/2 cups of water in the pot then place frozen tamale on steamer, put the lid on and then cook for about 25 - 30 minutes.
Update #2: It has now been almost four years that I purchased the rice cooker and yesterday it started malfunctioning. It still cooks a pot of rice but won't trigger the warmer with a popping sound to let you know its ready and it gets so hot that the rice sticks to the bottom of the inner pot. This is the first and only issue after four years, I guess its time for a new one.
This unit has a single quarter-sized heating element that comes in direct contact with the pot. It overcooks the bottom and creates a 1/8" layer of overcooked (bordering on burned) rice that's not edible. If you don't catch the rice immediately after it's ready, an unpleasant taste will permeate the entire batch. It's similar to a batch of popcorn that has just started to burn.
You can create a decent batch of rice if you stir the rice while it's cooking, but what's the point? I just threw mine in the trash today and ordered a different model. It's a lot more expensive, but I will be able to set it and forget it.
I used to have a rice cooker/steamer that operated much like a double-boiler. Water would boil underneath the pot that contained the rice/water mixture. It was impossible to burn the rice. It died after more than 10 years of service. Otherwise, I would still be using it.
I hated how pasta and rice and sometimes peas or lima beans would always 'over-boil' (even when watched closely!) and make a mess of the stove when cooked in saucepan...this eliminates that completely!
I use it several times a week and it has held up great now over three years with mine and daughter's is one year old. Hand wash mostly, but it has also weathered the dishwasher just fine.
