Large quantities are ok to blend but small quantities get stuck to the bottom which was a -ve for me.
I wouldn't try and crush ice in this thing. The motor smells like a toy train transformer after a few seconds, but all we use it for is mixing up protein shakes and fruit smoothies, so all it has to do is blend frozen berries. The pushbutton is a good idea, and the range of speeds is more than ample.
Overall I was fairly happy with the purchase. Not a bad value. It does what I want it to do and didn't cost an arm and a leg.
Then as I was having problems keeping up with a 2 year old and I found a shake diet that worked... so for a solid year - this has been grinding frozen fruit and ice at least 2 times a day, upwards of 5... all year... We had to replace the blade halfway through as the bushing started to get loose but it kept on grinding... now, we are sad that the front button finally broke and frantically looking to find just that part to keep our well used blender ticking.
We actually tried to replace it with a Ninja at one time - but found the Ninja to be too much like a food processor... it left too many chunks in the shake and just was more complicated to wash... The Osters do a great job at pulverizing ice and frozen fruits and veggies to a nice creamy state. We actually have another Oster in waiting when this one kicks it - but hoping we find a replacement for the button. Too many good memories to quit now! A wedding gift... helped us feed our first child... and now is partly responsible for helping my wife and I lose over 20 lbs each!
Another note - I would say we probably don't blend more than 2 cups worth of frozen anything at one time... it does seem to struggle if you try more.
The carafe is huge and heavy to handle. The base is surprisingly cheesy. The motor requires ear protection, in spite of the fact that it does nothing useful except make noise. I don't think any of the speeds are any different. Using it on "slow" is basically just slow noise and no action. The collar loosens during blending and you have to tighten it back up so the contents don't leak out the bottom when you remove the carafe from the base. The lid vibrates off during use.
i absolutely adore this blender, we got it as a wedding gift over a year and half ago. it's extremely powerful, unlike the wal-mart version i had previously. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and have made soup, pestos, breadcrumbs, smoothies, cake icing, etc. with it, no need for a food processor with this. the sad thing is that i went to grab it out of the pantry (we have a small kitchen so i cannot leave it on the counter as that's valuable real estate for chopping, kneading, etc.) and i dropped it, the glass shattered so we're now looking for the replacement jar.
for the price, it's excellent, no need to buy more expensive, just make sure you've assembled it right, placed it properly on the motor, and are using it right
