I did so much research and read so many reviews. I narrowed it down to 2 Oster blenders and went shopping. I wanted it sooner rather than waiting for it to be shipped so I did not buy it at Amazon. I did do all of my research here though. Anyway, the store I went to had my two choices but also had this model at half of the price. It had the same watt motor, all metal drive and the appearance was more to my liking than the other choices. So I thought why not and boy am I glad I took the chance. It works beautifully. I use it mainly for smoothies and they come out perfect. For those of you that complain about noise of other models, just keep it on the lower 4-5 speeds.I don't think this model is unreasonably loud but I have never had to use the top speed. I also make my own cashew cream and that comes out creamy smooth as well. My previous Kithen Aid could not come close and I spent $70 for it four years ago. I highly recommend this blender.

I considered America's Test Kitchen's recommended Kaloric blender and Consumer Reports recommended Oster. The Kaloric had too many 1 star reviews, the Oster did better in the reviews. Both were $40. I had a really cheap Hamilton Beech that lasted for over 10 years so I didn't want to spend more than $40, but less would be better. I thought I would check my local superstore and found a model identical to the CR rated one for $40 and this similar one for $21. I didn't pay attention to the "all metal drive" on the box so when I was taking it out of the box I was impressed with the metal blade assembly at the bottom. My HB's plastic blade base was cracked almost all the way through, so that won't happen here. The first thing I did after washing was try ice. It was indeed snowy as touted on the box and it is the quietest blender I have ever heard. The blades are very sharp, I will have to update in a few weeks to see if it lasts. The glass jar is very heavy, which is probably a good thing and the plastic screw on base is a very tough plastic, much better than the other blender which has cracks in this part too. The jar is labeled up to 5 cups, but it has a mark for 6 cups and then about another cup of header space. I might be tempted to buy a lighter plastic replacement pitcher at some point, but the weight probably helps make it work so well. It seems very similar to the other Oster models, the difference being number of speeds and the shape of the base. Surely 8 speeds are enough, and the base is pretty darn stable. The texture of smoothies was a big improvement over the old blender. We didn't know there was anything wrong with it, but wow. When I looked at the box I thought it would be nice if half of it were true. I can't recall another product where it is all true. The box simply states facts. This blender is incredible. I can't imagine the Kitchen Aids, Vikings and Vitamixes which cost 5-20 times the amount can do 5 times better, much less 20 times better.

This is a decent blender for the price. Jar is substantial glass, blade assembly is all metal. I use it mainly for protein smoothies. Tasked with something heavier, such as pureeing a soup seems to be difficult for it.

It is extremely lightweight, so I find I have to keep substantial pressure on the top of the beast with my hand while it's running or else it will hop off the counter. It does start to emit a burning smell after being run for a few minutes.

Let me admit I am a little frightened of this blender. Some others have written of the noise it makes. While it is loud, it isn't so much that as the sense that it's getting ready for blast-off. I keep a hand on the lid because the blender vibrates and wants to travel, and I just get a bad mental visual of the whole thing blowing clean off the counter. This means two things: (1) evidently the blenders I've owned in the past were weak weanie-blenders and (2) this sucker BLENDS - you can see it hurling the bottom ingredients upward immediately. Beyond that, I like the large glass jar, especially the wide mouth which makes it easier to pour out whatever you've just mixed and to get your hand in there to clean it if you wash by hand.

Cons: The buttons are a little weird, very close together and kinda cheap-looking. They don't satisfyingly "click" into place, they sort of "mush" down. Also, it's hard to get the blade clean because of its design. I use a clean toothbrush to really get into the tight spaces on the blades, but even that's not totally effective.

On whole, though it's taken some getting-used-to, I am growing fonder of this blender because it gets the job done. I paid just under $25 for it.

EDIT: A year and a half after purchase, it's still working fine and I use it often. It's still loud as hell and vibrates but at least it's not on long.

EDIT Jan 2014: Coming on 3 years since I bought the Oster. Just discovered there are accessories! Who knew? I just got Oster 4861 Food Processor Accessory on a Warehouse deal for $17. The price promptly dropped to $15 for the Warehouse ones right after, but it's always a gamble deciding when to "play" or "hold" whIle waiting for the perfect price. The accessory isn't without faults but it's nice to know it's available w/o buying a whole new appliance.

What do we really need a blender to do? Crush ice, mix drinks, blend smoothies. That's pretty much it. With that in mind I bought this very reasonably-priced blender. It does everything a blender is supposed to do and does it well. It is easy to clean. It is sturdy and dependable. The jar is glass - no weird plastic chemicals to worry about. Oster is a respected brand.

Don't throw good money away on bells and whistles. I would highly recommend this blender to anyone in the market.
