For the last six months I have been making various type of breads using my Oster bread maker.
Since getting a bread machine I have stopped buying bread.
I use the machine every 2-3 days to make 1.5 loaf to my family. Bakes such as bagel`s for example require me to take the dough out, shape it and etc.
In my opinion to much work and therefore I have not used the machine for these bake goods and I purchase those.
The recipes I used are turnkey where I put all ingredients in the machine and press a button. Any recipes which require additional steps (with exception to sourdough are not my forte)
So far I had excellent results, however I was tempting to see if there is added value in a “better” machine which should produce better results.
Two key things which were of interest for in in the Zoj were;
1. Preheat of ingredients prior for mixing
a. In many cases I make breads which require milk and/or eggs. These I keep in the fridge and when added they are COLD. When using my Oster I would add a 30 min extra to timer to allow ingredients to come to room temp , however in many cases they are still cooler than they should
2. Long shape
a. It is a pain in the A## to cut the bread Oster produce. The shape does not allow for easy to produce and consume sandwich slices. In addition it is hard to find a decent bread box which will fit the 1.5 loaf let alone 2lb loaf. When making soft fluffy loafs this is becoming a real issue.
Today I got the new BB-PAC20 and my initial impression compare to Oster:
• Zoj is heavier then Oster
• Zoj is twice and take twice the counter space as Oster
• Due to size of Zoj it is there to say where Oster can be stored and be used when and as needed.
• Zoj stops when lid is opened, which can be bothersome (my kid like to watch the bread getting mixed)
• Zoj seems to be better constructed.
• Zoj does not shift on counter when mixing due to its weight (My Oster already crushed to the floor once which required me to take it apart and put all the buttons and display back where they should be)
• Zoj have much better handles the Oster ( I removed the handle from my Oster , as in some cases high raise breads will “stick” to the handle and will challenge the loaf removal as the bread will stick to handle )
• Zoj looks “better” as its stainless and black finish vs white (which look dated).
I took a basic sweet bread (with egg`s) recipe and prepared the same recipe side by side on both units.
For both recipes I used same ingredients and same measurement cups, all in all beside the machine all other parameters are identical.
This test would allow me to test and see if there is added value for the high premium of the Zoj ($200 more the Oster) and see if the money and counter space are well spent here.
** See pictures for difference between Zoj and Oster during mixing and baking, as well for product produced **
This test is for BASIC functionality and used basic cycle with medium crust settings.
Crust – Both units were set to medium. Zoj product a thicker darker crust. Zoj crust is more consistent where Oster has lighter top then its sides.
Shape – As expected Zoj products longer and “lower” loaf which is easier to cut. Zoj loaf had two “bumps” due to its design of two mixing blades.
Texture – Zoj have more consistent texture where air “bubbles” are spread more evenly. Blades leave smaller hole in bread due to lower profile .
Taste – better “crunch” in Zoj , beside this both taste same to me.
My $0.02 :
If you children like bread with no crust Oster might be better, where if you like thicker crust with more crunch Zoj would be better.
If you intend to keep the bread machine on your counter Zoj will be more appealing due to design and color. If you plan to keep it in cabinet Oster is a better choice due to size and weight.
Zoj product a better product but by a very small margin, is it worth the extra $200 is all depend on the value of $200 to you.
If I will keep Zoj it will only be due to the loaf size and shape, all other to me is relative equal.

Status of this breadmaker: Showing its age but still chugging!
I have been relocated by my company (together with my family) here in the US from Singapore. We moved to New Jersey around Nov, 2012 and we have been buying loaves of bread from our nearby supermarket daily @ $2.50 a pop 5 times a week. Over the couple of months we noticed that we are feeling a bit "down" thinking it was just us adjusting to the weather but we were also gaining weight every month. So, trying to be "healthy" we started reading the labels of each food we buy and noticed a LOOOOT of ingredients that looked like from a science fiction/medical drama series (see attached photo). So we thought of making our own bread from scratch but didn't want to spend a lot of time kneading and rising the dough everyday.
Enter this bread machine and some research enabled us to save money and in turn saved our health. For the money saving part, we sourced the following ingredients:
Great Value Flour 25-Pound - $8 (37 servings)
Great Value Powdered Milk 4-lbs - $16 (64 servings)
Zulka Morena Pure Cane Sugar, 8 lbs - $5 (128 servings)
Great Value: Vegetable Oil, 1 Gal - $5 (64 servings)
Augason Farms Iodized Salt, 104 oz - $5 (623 servings)
Bob's Red Mill Gluten Flour Pack of 4 of 22-ounce each - $23 (83 servings)
The Ready Store:
SAF Premium Yeast 16oz - $7 (48 servings)
Note: Per 1 serving denotes 1 loaf of 1.5 lb bread. So per serving of all combined ingredients above costs me $1.012! (Savings: $1.488). So in less than 2 months, I already made back the cost of the bread machine. So after that and 28 months later today - this breadmaker is still baking strong even after roughly 500 loaves of bread (20+/- loaves a month) with a total saving of around $700+.
That said, we felt better after a couple of months and lost some weight. Even our dog likes our freshly baked bread - note that she NEVER EVER touched the ones we bought from the store. Not to mention the great sensation of smelling the loaves you bake - it's freshness! And a dab of butter on a freshly cut loaf lifts up your morale even more!
The other best thing about making your bread at home - you can go beyond that simple loaf of bread! Add nuts, add eggs, add spices. Turn it into pumpernickel. Turn it into hoagies. Into fresh baguette. Into basically...anything! I bought the "The Artisan Bread Machine" here in Amazon and delved into more creations. We can now make anything the fancy bakeries out there can make WITHOUT the unspeakable ingredients.
* Can make a variety of loaves with your desired setting
* It takes only around 5 minutes to dump in the ingredients then it mixes and bakes
* Never failed to make the perfect loaf (only if you put in the correct ingredients in the correct order)
* As it ages (more than 2 years old now), the non-stick coating is fading but that's to be expected
* It doesn't do laundry
If this breaks - I'm buying it again and hopefully the same quality as before. Worth the money and ROI pays off quickly. Better health knowing you know what goes in your bread > Priceless!
After almost 4 years - we have to let go of this beloved bread machine of ours. Not because it stopped working, but because we once again have to move to a country of different voltage and would deem impractical to bring this along. So almost after 4 years - it is still working and will hopefully find a new home (donated to the VVA).
Definitely, if I ever found the same brand, we're buying this again.
This is a final revision of this review - This bread machine has given us wonderful bread (and some bad ones - our fault) and wonderful memories. And thank you for the helpful comments that helped us and others. Hope this would help more people in the future.
I got proved wrong. I did not follow any of the instructions out of the manual. I am not a pro at making bread but have made all kinds by hand before, it is not hard. I added the basics in the proportions recommended off of a website, I did not use bread flour, I used just plain white flour mixed 50/50 with whole wheat flour. Set the machine and stood there watching it, starring through the window the whole time, LOL! Just like a little kid amazed :-) The machine mixed quietly, kneeded, rose then baked, out popped this perfect colored loaf! The machine did not walk off the counter as in other reviews. During mixing I had to add a little flour because the dough was too wet, no big emergency...To think I almost spent $250 for a bread maker makes me sick to my stomach after using this! There is a reason this is a top seller on Amazon and is rated so well.... for $59.00 I feel I ripped them off! Buy it, you will love it! It does all the same things the $250 machines do. I really liked the fact that through the baking process you could still touch the machine and not burn yourself. Parts of it were hot, but, if I had to move it I could, and the bottom where the handles are stays completely cool. I would buy another one right now, in a heartbeat! This would make a great gift for someone at this price point!
The toast is amazing!! Oh so crunchy edges, Thankfully I will never have to buy store bought bread ever again!
The toast went down with grape jelly and a cup of hot Earl Grey tea, heaven.
I am impressed! Thanks Oster and Amazon!
