Great collection and addition to the Kino releases

Thunderbean Animation is picking up where Kino left off by giving us the Betty Boop cartoon shorts that where not included in their four volume set.

But please manage your expectations and remember that Kino had access to studio negatives for the best possible source material whereas Thunderbean is sourcing from the best 16mm and 35mm prints available to them. So quality varies from cartoon to cartoon.

It is great to have a company like Thunderbean (that really cares about animation) picking up the slack that Kino left hanging. Looking forward to Vol 2 from Thunderbean

Great work as always from Thunderbean. It’s SO nice to see these films as they were originally shown with the best prints available on physical media where you have slow motion and frame advance so you can really appreciate and study the animation. This is something I miss when streaming cartoons from YouTube or Disney+.

I’m no expert on visuals. Some people have a razor sharp eye when it comes to detecting good or bad quality. I’m not concerned with having phenomenal quality. I just want whatever I’m watching on Blu-ray or DVD to look nice. This Blu-ray does not look nice. I have the 4 volumes from Olive of the Betty Boop Essential Collection, and I bought this to get the rest of the shorts I wanted. But the dip in quality is not just noticeable. It’s distracting. There’s something very wrong when I'm able to find better looking versions of these shorts on YouTube. Besides lots of spots and blemishes, it’s like the brightness was turned up, which diminishes some details, and the blacks blend together. I don’t expect cartoons from 90 years ago to look fantastic, but the cartoons on the Olive discs looked far better than this, and again, there are better versions of these on YouTube. I’m bummed. I was excited to watch these, but not anymore.

Just to let you know I have lots of discs from Thunderbean and like almost all of them, but not this one! Since this set is supposed to compliment the already released 4 Volumes on Blu-ray by another company, and is supposed to be some of the missing Cartoons that are not on those sets, I assumed these Cartoons were either Restored or made from Original or very good 35mm Prints. Sad to say that only 3 of the Cartoons on this set look like they come from 35mm Prints. The others look like really bad 16mm Prints that are copies of copies of copies. I’ve got most of these so-called missing Cartoons from DVD’s (and Laserdisc) that look much better than most of the ones on this set. If you are a die-hard Betty Boop Cartoon Collector and want the 3 Cartoons that were made from 35mm elements and the missing Cartoon (from the French Print in English), then I would get this set, otherwise I’d pass it up and wait for the day when these Cartoons are released again from Original 35mm Prints. I give it only 1 Star because Thunderbean used to put on their discs really good prints, but most of these look like garbage and do NOT belong on Blu-ray at all!

Great Betty Boop cartoons finally released on Blu-ray...

I was so glad to finally get this set on Blu-ray, as these are my favorite of the Betty Boop cartoons. It was a bit disappointing that the quality that is still not up to usual Blu-ray remastering standards, but that is to be expected considering the age of these cartoons. It is still a good improvement over my older DVD release of these cartoons (I have the "Giant 600 Cartoon Pack" DVD collection, which these same cartoons are on). The cartoons on this Blu-ray are less grainy, with better audio clarity and overall better brightness and contrast, though some cartoons still have odd flashes and spots in the animation in some areas. Overall, it is worth getting if you prefer these Betty Boop cartoons over others or just want to have them all on Blu-ray.

16mm prints not worthy of Blu-ray

16mm film is rarely worthy of Blu-ray unless they were printed directly from the 35mm negatives.
NONE of these were. Most of these 16mm prints were made from the NTA 16mm TV negatives and not very good. Low budget NTA used inferior labs to make their negatives and prints leaving timing errors in their prints.

Better results are on the cheapie "Echo Bridge" Betty Boop DVDs which look like they were sourced from the old Republic Laserdiscs, which were mastered from pristine 35mm prints that Republic owned.

I was excited when I heard Thunderbeam was going to release this, and then let down when I heard it was 16mm masters. The Fleischer Family is in the process of restoring their Grandfather's cartoons from 35mm master elements in Paramount's Vaults. I don't know why this was even released.

The first cartoon "Betty Boop's Ker-Choo" is a disaster from the very start. There are light vertical streaks through out the picture. There there are the film scratches, both blackened white. The contrast is moderately high causing whites to wash out and blacks to lose details.

The Fleischer Family is busily restoring these very cartoons with access to Paramount's 35mm nitrate negatives. Be patient and check their website to view some of these restorations.

Not the best picture quality for a Thunderbean disc, but still worth buying.

When it comes to Thunderbean, there are two types of discs. Special and official. Special discs contain high quality scans of films and cartoons without any major work done to them. This is how Steve funds for the official discs, which contain full blown restorations. In this case, The Other Betty Boop Cartoons was originally intended to be a special disc, but Steve went a step further and made this a semi-official set, meaning that it’s licensed but doesn’t have full blown restorations. Don’t expect the cartoons on this set to be pristine like other official Blu Rays but don’t expect bad picture quality either. The cartoons look really good, despite some noticeable wear and tear and occasional fuzzy resolution. Like all Thunderbean sets, I recommend you buy this but don’t expect the cartoons to be fully restored.
