Many of the pronouncements of the prophets and of Jesus seem strange or unintelligible without reference to this era and to the Land Law of Moses that provided the foundation for a fair and equitable economic system.
Especially interesting.is that America's early period followed this same Land Law to a great extent. This goes far to explain why rags to riches stories were the norm, not a rarity, and why America was looked up to around the world as the hope of the downtrodden. And this also gives the clues to how this egalitarian society can be restored-- with an emphasis on changing our approach to taxation.
The author clearly takes the Bible and the word of God literally. However, his historical evidence and the logic of his arguments remain equally powerful and pertinent to those of us who view Scripture figuratively--as divinely inspired, one might say. In sum, this is an important and eye-opening book that deserves widespread attention.
But John Kelly's new book kept me going through a great summary of the Old Testament and a review of Jesus Christ's ministery. It winds up in our current day with a look at economic development in several parts of the world. And it does all this from the viewpoint of what Kelly refers to as the "Land Law" of God. It really changed my perspective on some of my Christian values.
The author has conducted a remarkable study of an overlooked theological concept, and I give him high marks for scholarship. And yet his style is fairly simple and therefore very readable. I think I can create a new course based on the ideas presented in this book.
