Editorial Reviews

Make no mistake about it, Shooter Jennings has never been one to allow expectations, boundaries, genre or ideals dictate the direction of his art. From the moment he burst onto the scene, it was clear that he had a style and a vision all his own that would separate him from the leagues of cookie-cutter artists out there.

During the recording sessions for Shooter s previous release, Family Man, as in life, things began to shift and change and The Other Life began to take form. Over the duration of 2012, Shooter and The Triple Crown finished work on The Other Life, and Shooter and long time video-collaborator Blake Judd began planning an expansive film counterpart to the album. Shot across Tennessee, Kentucky, Nevada and California, The Other Life film paints a story of isolation, temptation and rebirth through visual storytelling. As an album, The Other Life sees Shooter using all the colors of the pallets of previous recordings, and bringing them together to make his most diverse and interesting album to date. He enlists the help of friends and icons alike, Austin Texas madman Scott H. Biram shares vocal duties on the Steve Young penned The White Trash Song, Patty Griffin blesses Wild and Lonesome and Black Oak Arkansas Jim Dandy preaches alongside Shooter in the Black Oak Arkansas lost gem 15 Million Light-Years Away. But it is with the closing The Gunslinger that we see a portrait of a man hell bent on making art his way no matter who may try and get in the way.

In 2012, Shooter also began work producing records for other artists. On March 12th, the same day as The Other Life s release, Lexington, KY dirt rock band Fifth on the Floor will release Ashes & Angels, the first of three records Shooter produced the previous year. Jason Boland s Dark and Dirty Mile will follow, as well as a yet-unnamed record with Reno s Hellbound Glory.

In the long run, in his short time here Shooter has been a very prolific and daring artist. Dangerous in his disregard for rules put upon him by the greedy. Deceptive in his unpredictability. Bound only by the progressive evolution of music and controlled only by will and determination, Shooter Jennings will never be able to placed upon a shelf or chained to a simple concept. But as dreams and nightmares continue to blossom and reality continues to crumble, there is comfort to be taken in the fact that artists like Shooter still care about art and disregard the rigid restrictions put upon it by corporate slave-drivers and the mainstream gatekeepers.

I never leave reviews, but this is special. I don't get much country rock music, but again this is special. Shooter has hit the mark with this work. Outlaw tribute to Waylon, Jim Dandy, great songs and what a vibe. You just don't hear this in 2013. This has soul and if you were ever a fighter I'll bet you will like this stuff!! Thanks

Shooter Jennings does what he wants, so this record is country/rock/Americana and amazing. I listened to it like five times in a row as soon as I got it. There are some definite flashes of Waylon influence on here as well. I love "The Low Road", about doing what you have to do because sometimes the high road is closed; "Outlaw You" is a direct shot at manufactured country acts who 'couldn't hit country with a baseball bat', 'name-dropping Johnny Cash' (who could that be? ;-) ); equally amazing is "Wild & Lonesome" with Patty Griffin. There is even some kind of trip-hop with "The Flying Saucer Song". "The Gunslinger" has an old-school Skynyrd/Waylon feel to it, but is kind of Kid Rock edgy with the spoken word delivery. Shooter is everyman, but unique at the same time. A great CD for just chilling out: sitting in the driveway and drinking some beers.

Every release from Shooter is a pleasure and this one is particularly enjoyable. My favorite is the title track. The use of the piano in this song harkens back to an old Patsy Kline song, and the longing and heartache are palpable. There is a little of everything on this record: straight ahead rock, trippy 70's style guitar wanderings, spacy flying saucers, old style country, syncopated country chanting and acoustic guitar strumming. I've had this on repeat ever since it arrived. This is another solid performance in a line of fantastic efforts from my favorite Gunslinger.

He has done it again. An awesome album of Outlaw Country. Great riffs and excellent lyrics make this a must buy for Outlaw Country albums. If you've been listening to Kid Rock and think he's good than this will blow the mud and bull snot out of your ears and you'll hear what real music is. I love playing this in the 85 Camaro while heading down to the local biker bar. It's always a winner to help pick up chicks.

First things first, this review will be bias. Shooter Jennings 6th album & 5th studio release is a genre busting piece of art. The term country rocker does not do Shooter justice. There is roots, country, Americana, rock, metal, blues, and jazz present on this album. Shooter is the most original recording artist on and scene today. Shooter makes the music he wants. He always has but since leaving his major label deal after 4 record releases he shocked fans and thrilled critics with "Black Ribbons" in 2010. A rock opus that stands the test the time to this day. Following "Black Ribbons" was 2012's "Family Man" album which some labeled a return to country when really it was Shooter introducing the public to stripped down roots country music.

Enter 2013's new release "ThenOther Life". When the opening track plays you may right away think you are getting ready to hear a Black Ribbons like album but that track is directly followed up by the upbeat country tune "The White Trash Song" which features Scott H. Birham. You then continue to go thru a ride of musical bliss with stand out tracks "The Outsider, "ThenOther Life", etc.

Then there is the closing track "The Gunslinger". My favorite Shooter songs are the ones drenched with emotion I.E. "All Of This(could have been yours)" from Black Ribbons. the Gunslinger is an angry Shooter Jennings writing a song from a dark place and revisiting that same place while laying down the vocals. No, I was not present when it was recorded but you can feel it in the vocal delivery.

I know I didn't go song by song in this review I more so wanted new listeners or fans to know what you get with a Shooter Jennings album.

Shooter drops another great album on the world this year. Some greatsongs that show his range and his passion for what he does. I would love it if he toured more extensively, but I understand, he sticks to a smaller tour area.

Shootershould be selling millions of albums and be a famous act on his own accord, it is time to wake up. It is time for this awful pop-country age to die, this will be looked back on for the disemgenous age of corporatism that it is. Shooter has the name to get on the marquee, the balls to tell Nashville to piss off, and the talent to lay down great records year in and year out.

Armed with great musicians and a bullet-proof country pedigree , Shooter hits the mark by staying focused on his target (audience). His usual chip-on the-shoulder swagger comes with a steady hand this time, and he delivers well crafted songs with a consistent message of be-true-to-yourself / I'm a self-reliant diamond-in-the-rough / sorry-but-I'm-an-unapologetic-dirt-ball. He crosses musical borders all while staying true to country roots, and leaves you with a "what was that!" sensation--just like the misunderstood ball of fire streaking through the late night sky he describes in the opening track.
It may not have his best songs ever, but it's a solid album with several songs that could make it to a best-of album, somewhere down the line.
