As a huge fan of the groundbreaking, sorely underrated science fiction author, Philip José Farmer, I am thrilled that this classic book is back in print. This account of the secret history behind Jules Verne's AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS is an audacious and inventive take on that classic novel. Unlike many of today's deconstructionist authors, Farmer tells us details Verne was not privy to, rather than taking an "everything you know is wrong" approach. His characterization of Verne's and other authors' characters is wholly consistent with his predecessors', and his revelations never seem contrived (not even his controversial claims as to Captain Nemo's true identity.) Rounding out the book is an afterword, family tree, and chronology by lifelong Farmerphile (and co-author with him of THE EVIL IN PEMBERLEY HOUSE) Win Scott Eckert summarizing Fogg's connection to Farmer's extended family of literary and pulp heroes known as the Wold Newton Family, the mythos of which plays a prominent role in this book. This includes some startling revelations regarding the connection between Farmer and Fogg. Longtime fans of Peoria's finest author will be startled and overjoyed. I recommend this delightful tome to fans of Jules Verne, Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Walter Scott, the steampunk genre (for which this book serves as one of the earliest modern entries), and the late, great Phil Farmer.

The Other Log of Phileas Fogg is the secret account of what really happened to the titular hero during Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days. This is a great steampunk adventure, filled with secret alien societies, an interesting cast of characters.
If you're a Jules Verne, science fiction, and steampunk fan, definitely give The Other Log of Phileas Fogg a shot. This is also a must read for fans of Farmer's Wold Newton Family. Phileas Fogg is in the Wold Newton Family, as is his nemesis in this book, Professor Moriarty.
If you read this book and enjoy it, be sure to check out the sequel, Phileas Fogg in The War of Shadows by Joshua Reynolds, published by Metoer House Press. A worth follow up adventure.

A lot of science fiction is very serious but it isn't always fun; The Other Log of Phileas Fogg manages to be both. And I'll admit that I've always been a sucker for the SF or fantasy "back story" of some famous tale or historical event, which this does--and with the help of a host of other famous literary characters. Throw in the adventure (a big source of the fun) and you get a triple crown. If you're looking for hard SF or something "edgy" this isn't going to do it for you, but if you want an enjoyable, classic read that also seems to have predated steampunk by quite awhile, then Other Log is the book you should be snatching up.

In the forward to THE OTHER LOG OF PHILEAS FOGG, Philip José Farmer indicates that he has read AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS about five or six times. I believe him, considering that Farmer was an adolescent and a young man when he did it. As a senior citizen, I do not think I could stomach reading Jules Verne's novelette even a second time. It's not that good. Nevertheless, do not let me dissuade you from reading it. Then you'll know what the famous story is all about.
Farmer's version of the story is based on the damaged remains of Phileas Fogg's personal journal, discovered in 1947 in a house that Fogg once occupied. As in Verne's version, Farmer's version leads the reader around the world in an attempt to win a wager. What Farmer does, and what Verne does not do, is reveal a hidden war between mysterious factions wielding science-fictional instruments. During his journey, Fogg, a member of the Eridanean faction, is attacked by the Capelleans, and miscellaneous adventures ensue.
Consistent with Farmer's habit of inserting famous fictional characters into his stories, such characters have roles in his plot here. But I'll allow you to be surprised by their identities. Another of Farmer's habits is to subtly point out errors in the original famous work, and he does that for AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS. I respect that. I do, however, disapprove of Farmer's levity, even though Verne's work is not deadly serious. Levity does not exist in all of Farmer's stories, and it's not as blatant here as it is in Verne's story of Phileas Fogg. Yet, I prefer fantasy and science-fiction adventures with gravity. A more dedicated, serious approach would have earned Farmer five stars.
Notes:
1. My January 1982 Tor paperback edition has attractive cover art, but do not be misled. Nothing in the story resembles this picture.
2. The interior has seven fine drawings that do resemble the story.
3. Near the end of Chapter Twelve (page 149 in my edition), "Singapore" is an error. Replace it with either "Shantou" or "Shanghai."

It is a unique perspective. However, it felt more like it was a mental puzzle for Philip Jose Farmer to figure out how to weave this story into a alternative to the original. Interesting for the reader, but not nearly as compelling as many of his other novels.

Farmer seems to capture Verne's take on Britishism, at least as I recall from reading Around the World years ago. Into an already highly implausible story, Farmer weaves an even more implausible story, where two alien races compete for control of Earth and communicate through card games. If that's not wacky enough, perhaps you will see characters from other Verne novels make an appearance.

I am so happy that these Farmer classics are being re-published and available on Kindle.
This book tells the story of Phileas Fogg's trip around the world and what it was really about. An ancient interstellar war.

Hard Going.

I was disappointed in this book.
I was expecting a cracking read parallel to Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 days with a twist.
There is a twist but the book took so long to get started with a really boring back story I gave up.

I've just received my Titan edition of The Other Log of Phileas Fogg!
Over the last three decades I must have read this novel three or four times and each time I have reverted to my Tor version from 1982.Being a big fan of the source novel I was delighted and fascinated with how my favourite author wound his own version of events in with the Verne classic. Rereading the book only added to the enjoyment as new depths of understanding and revelation became apparent to me. Philip José Farmer did a wonderful job with this novel and his love and appreciation of Around the World in 80 Days shines through the whole book.
I love collecting books, especially Farmer books, so of course this Titan reprint would be on my wish list. But what really sold it for me were the enticing new `extras' promised and, boy, do they live up to the promise! Win Scott Eckert's afterword `Only a Coincidence' has the sub title "Phileas Fogg, Philip José Farmer, and the Wold Newton Family." What follows is a gripping, fascinating, and erudite essay into the whole Wold Newton legend. These 23 pages are packed with facts, revelations, and interpretations that are as gripping as any piece of prose. Anyone wanting a full and detailed exposure to the Wold Newton Family need not look any further. I particularly love the Fogg-Farmer family tree and if your eyes don't widen suddenly as you take it in then you have better reserve than me!
Then follows a 10 page chronology, again by Eckert. Another fascinating read that distils, with absolute clarity, the major events linked with The Other Log of Phileas Fogg.
So, if you already own this book and have no intention of rereading it (though you'll miss revisiting an old friend!) you really should consider buying this edition for the extras. They're worth every penny of the cover price. And if you're new to all things Wold Newton you couldn't wish for a better introduction. Thank you, Titan, for this wonderful reprint, and thank you Mr Eckert for the effort and thought you put into such wonderful extra material for this book.
