Will she really be strong enough to save them all ? Will Asher, and the rebels find a way to save the day ? Will she be able to save her family from their prisons ? Can her human mother and her best friend last much longer without help ?
While the author does a wonderful job of filling the reader in, it is best to read book one first to get the depth of the characters and their intertwined relationships with each other. The world though foreign holds believability and complex imaginary, many levels of love and a group of complex characters who are well rounded and have, often tragic, complex backgrounds.
The story does have a few minor curse words and lots of action packed violent events. The book deals with alcoholism, kidnapping, torture and raw emotions. I would say based on the content and the grade level of the vocabulary words that it is best suited for children 14years and up. I, for one, am looking forward to the next book in this well written series.
The Other Queen:
The first book left on a major cliffhanger. This story picks up where the last ended. While the author does a wonderful job of filling the reader in, it is best to read book one first to get the depth of the characters and their intertwined relationships with each other. I like that the characters react emotionally to events in their lives. It is filled with action and romance. The main character, Reggie, is a strong young girl, who has been taking care of her alcoholic mother. Her world is turned upside down when she learns she has some really great powers. This causes the evil from another dimension to want to take it away from her and take other her dimension, too. This book continues with the battle. The plan is to get the leaders and infiltrate the place and give Andrius a one two punch. She must save her family and friends and one who maybe a friend or a foe. Will her head strong ways get her or her friends killed? I can’t wait to see what will happen next.
Reggie has accepted her role as an Aether Mage, but her powers are unfocused, chaotic. She has the help of her friends, her surrogate father, and her main squeeze, Asher, to help her as she plots to wrest control of The Other away from the Dark Mage, Andrius (insert booing and hissing noises here). But Andrius is not going to simply wait for for Reggie to come to him.
When Reggie is contacted in a dream by a mysterious girl known as the Black Queen, Reggie learns that Andrius has within his grasp a powerful whose potential is unknown even to him.
I'd say more, but that would be telling.
This book is full of action, witty dialogue, and amazing world-building. Ms. Jaycox has improved a lot since the first book (and the new covers are badASS), and I can only hope she doesn't make me wait so long for the next book in the series!
Reggie, a fantastic character in her own right, has so much to deal with in this book. She's finally safe ... for now ... and completely unaware that the people she loves are in danger. In her mind, they're supposed to be safe in the Real while she tries to beat Andrius. But there is one person she knows needs her help - her father - and she will do whatever she must for him.
We're taken through twists and turns as Reggie and Asher both struggle to get control over their immense powers. They're under the protection of Rhys, but even that won't be enough when they start to see the situation is more dire than they imagined. Reggie is forced to put herself on the line while Asher must face the demons of his past and the insane amount of guilt and anger he's carried around with him.
The story ends abruptly, leaving me wanting sooooo much more. I can't wait for the next one
