The dialogue brings the story to life, placing the reader in the middle of the action, whether it be fighting the enemy or making love with his new wife. My heart goes out to Ualan, his trials were many, but in the end he triumphed with the help of his family and friends, and his beloved wife, Sorcha. Great period love story!
A story of kinship, hard men and a constant readiness to face conflict are key ingredients in this superb story. The romantic interludes are painted with a deft hand and given the story, I would credit the sexual scenes as ‘hot’, rather than ‘cosy and heartwarming’.
From the outset, the use of Gaelic names does not alienate, but rather creates something tangible about the characters and places. The author’s considerable skill has been used to interweave local dialect and the modern tongue, thus while creating a flavour for the period, still making the story easy to digest.
The imagery, dialogue and sub-plots are well written, and so too is the choreography in the scenes of conflict. A fine ending awaits those who subscribe to this historical tale of a time when a man’s word could be his making, or see him meet his maker.
