About the Author

After winning multiple scholarships and awards - including the University Medal in History at both Acadia University and the University of Dundee, and the CLB Award at Dalhousie Law School - Paul Kimball graduated from Acadia in 1989 with an Honors Degree in History and in 1992 from Dalhousie with a law degree. From 1992 until 1997, Paul was a musician, songwriter and producer during the heyday of the Halifax indie music scene. In late 1997 he moved to the film and television industry, working as the Program Administrator at the Nova Scotia Film Development Corporation and a consultant for several provincial governments before he founded the Halifax-based production company Redstar Films in 1999. He has since had work commissioned by a wide variety of networks and distributors, including the CBC, Space, TVNZ, Vision TV, Bravo, Content Films, and B7 Media. His films include the documentaries Stanton T. Friedman Is Real, Best Evidence: Top 10 UFO Sightings, Denise Djokic: Seven Days Seven Nights, Synchronicity, and Fields of Fear, the television series The Classical Now and Ghost Cases, and the feature films Eternal Kiss and Damnation. He has served as the Treasurer and President of the Nova Scotia Film and Television Producers Association, a member of the Nova Scotia Film Advisory Committee, and was a founding member of the Motion Picture Industry Association of Nova Scotia. His paranormal-themed blog, The Other Side of Truth, has been read by over 1,000,000 people since its creation in 2005, and he has appeared on myriad radio and television programs over the past decade to discuss his films, including Coast to Coast, The X-Zone, Binnall of America, Radio Misterioso, Night Fright, The Paranormal Podcast, and Strange Days Indeed. He has written for various magazines, including Phenomena and Alien Worlds, and spoken at a number of conferences in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Paul lives in his hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he continues to enjoy chocolate chip cookies, the zen of the vanilla milkshake, and slow walks to nowhere in particular.

Unashamedly autobiographical and speculative, while solidly grounded in well-referenced objectivity, "The Other Side of Truth" utilises the author's active interest in the paranormal to peer around the edge of perception in an attempt to glimpse some of the reality at the heart of the human condition. Kimball takes the supernatural in hand to break through the language barrier inherent in all such speculations and goes on to explore humankind's mysterious, puzzle-like relationship with scientific progress, art, music, film, works of fiction, poetry, philosophy, politics, theology, history, and all forms of the imagination. Part travelogue, the book consistently deepens the mystery with a whole range of references to the author's experience of the paranormal via personal anecdote and investigation, always bringing the reader back to the essential question begging to be asked in a society overridden with banality and spectacle - 'who are we, and even more importantly, who do we want to become?' There are photographs throughout, and the bibliography and footnotes are great for further reading. Overall, it's an intriguing, all-encompassing, concise, funny and sometimes moving page-turner, and, if all that doesn't take your fancy, it's still a fantastic book about UFOs and ghosts and stuff.

Above all, this was a fun book to read. Paul is a good storyteller, and can flesh out his experiences and theories in a very entertaining way. This is not about hard science and proving the paranormal. This is about experiences, and the bigger picture. Throughout this book, you get to know Paul a bit. His personality shines through, and he is not shy with his opinions. The essence of the idea here is that the paranormal, in it's many facets, is a work of art of a higher intelligence. That may sound a bit odd, but as you read through, and Paul clarifies what he means by art, it makes more and more sense. In this sense, art is communication. Paul covers ghosts, UFO's, shadow people, synchronicity, alternate universes, the observer effect, reincarnation, and much more. It all kind of interweaves.

Paul discusses his TV show, Ghost Cases, and suggests that ghosts are not what the general consensus believes. He has some pretty fascinating experiences, and you get to follow through his mindset and how it leads to this bigger idea. Throughout it all, you will also get a bit of more obscure history thrown in here and there. He covers an array of synchronicities that happened to him over a short period of time, and what it meant to him. Interpretation is key in the paranormal. And this is a fresh and thought proving way to view it. There is a chapter on time travel, for example, that serves as much as anything, as a thought experiment, and suggests some new ideas.

Overall, if you are interested in the paranormal, and have a somewhat open mind, pick up this book. You will likely enjoy it. If nothing else, it may get you thinking about things in a different way.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Paul's book, especially how he relates his own personal experiences to the paranormal phenomenon. This book is not about the usual UFO sightings or ghost tales, which I find refreshing but more about the synchronous connections we all share and how it relates to what is referred to paranormal experience. I highly recommend!

In The Other Side of Truth, Paul Kimball presents a new and profoundly important vision of how we may view the constellation of ideas and phenomenon called "the paranormal." This isn't your typical rundown of UFO crash cases or "significant crop circles of the British Isles" kind of book. It's an intensely personal approach to humanist thought which envisions art, science, and the strange as being much larger, and much more connected that we might think.
