The otter box commuter turns out to be a wonderfully designed case for the phone. It has two pieces, polycarbonate and silicone, as described. The silicone fits over the phone as a jacket. When I first placed it on, the covers for the ports were loose and flapped around, but once you place the shell over it, it closes the port covers which actually end up operating quite nicely. The case feels nice and secure. The power button and the volume buttons are covered, but remain easy to press. It doesn't add a lot of bulk, though it is of course not as sleek with out the case. But I'll trade a little less aesthetics for protection. One thing that I am happy about is the lift it gives on both the screen side and back camera lens. Whenever I set the phone down without the case, and mind you that this maybe a design flaw on HTC's part, I heard the camera lens make contact with the surface. One of the reasons I got this phone was for the phenomenal camera, so I would have hated to see my pictures come out tainted with a permanent scratch to the camera lens. This case resolved my worries. The screen protector that came with looked rather promising, though, I screwed up the installation of it on a horrible level. I noticed a small piece of dust, in the center of the screen, and being a perfectionist when it comes to this stuff, I tried to remove it, ultimately resulting in a screen protector full of dog hair and dust. Of course, that is no one's fault but mine. I ended up purchasing this product: [...]
The only reason I gave it a 4/5 is the price, I know it isn't too expensive, but if it is competing with other products, it may struggle. I was also looking at the ballistic case, which was maybe $5.00 cheaper. What sold me was the port covers. I would recommend this to anyone, though.

Bullet-proof protection for your cell phone - I had already cracked one screen on a spanking new HTC OneS, so I went all out and purchased the Defender case. I have to say, I've not been disappointed. Rock-solid, super tight fit and finish, lives up to the price and the hype. Simply drop the phone into the hardened shell, snap on the front protective screen and then wrap the entire rig in the gel-like shell that fits around the sides and back. Belt clip doubles as a kick-stand. Access to all the buttons and inputs is flawless. I highly recommend this product for folks who tend to be rough on their cell phones.

I purchased this case last summer and was extremely excited about getting a case made with the OtterBox quality I had heard so much about. Unfortunately, within 3 months, the outer rubber case became extremely loose; exposing the inner hard case. Frustrated, I contacted OtterBox and they replaced it for free. While with the first case, I was careful not to put the phone into tight pockets or do anything to loosen the rubber, I was EXTRA careful with the second case. Six months into my second case and exactly the same problem happened. In fact, my phone dropped and fell completely out of the rubber and the hard case upon impact! I was stunned and have been contemplating whether to contact OtterBox again. While they'll probably replace this case too, I don't want to have to go through the trouble of replacing the thing that is supposed to keep my phone safe. In the meantime, I have purchased a cheaper rubberized case for under $7.

This problem is apparently not rare, either. I have a friend who has the same style of case for her Samsung Galaxy phone and she has the same problem too, so I know it is not a problem with just the case for the HTC One S. In my experience, you're unfortunately paying only for the OtterBox replacement guarantee and the name brand, but the quality isn't there. Perhaps they spent so much time perfecting iPhone cases that they forgot that us Android folks have expensive phones too.

Save your money and look into a cheaper, more effective case for your phone...unless you like having OtterBox customer service on speed dial.

There is a difference between the Commuter and the Defender Series of cases by Otterbox. Both are nice cases, but they are different items.

I ordered the Defender series. The Commuter series arrived in the mail.

Amazon customer service is great, but they couldn't tell me if Amazon or an affiliate sold me the case. It said Amazon on the order and it came from an Amazon distribution center, but there appears to be some doubt.

They shipped me another Defender series and assured me they would verify it was a Defender series.

When the new one arrived - overnighted, it was a Commuter series, again. This time the factory barcode had an aftermarket sticker with a different number and it labelled as a Defender (it even says it has a holster on the 'new' label). I guess they overlooked the 3 other places on the packaging where it says 'Commuter Series.'

I would advise anyone who wants a Defender Series not to purchase it on the Amzon site.

Once again, great customer service, but there was a breakdown somewhere.

Overall, I like the OtterBox case. It fits my HTC One S well and was very easy to install, etc. I haven't put it through any significant drops, as of yet, but my impression is that the case should do a decent job of cushioning the fall, should one occur. I went for the black on black version and it looks good and doesn't feel like it adds much bulk to the phone at all. In that sense, I think it's a very good choice.

If I have a complaint it's that the shell that comprises most of the outer layer of the case is made of a hard plastic and is very slick, despite having a textured feel. The result is that I find myself stretching my hand to reach the corners, where the softer inner layer of the case pokes through the outer shell so that I can get a firm grip on the phone. I think the issue is more pronounced because the phone itself is fairly large, so it maybe doesn't rest quite as naturally in your hand as a smaller phone would. Also, I'd love to be able to set the phone on the dash of my car now and then when I'm using Google Maps to navigate, but it's so slick that it wouldn't stay up there for 5 seconds... I'll probably have to buy a mount of some sort for the windshield.
