The power button/IR blaster is not covered (which is good), and the case makes the power button easier to find and press. Without the case, the power button is a little hard to find and press unless you're looking right at it.
The volume control is also much easier to use with the case. Again, without the case, the volume control is hard to find and use by touch.
As far as I can tell, nothing is covered that shouldn't be, and everything is covered that should be.
The case's rubber lip protects the screen, and it keeps the phone from sliding when face down. The back of the case is a harder shell, so it can still slide, but a bit less than without the case.
It's easy enough to take it on and off, once you do it a couple times.
My only complaint - which is really a little complaint about the phone - is that the case has the same form as the phone's body. I guess it's supposed to, but I had hoped that the case might actually have a flat back so that the phone doesn't wobble when you're trying to use it when it's lying on it's back on a hard, flat surface (e.g., a desk). The case reduces the wobbling a little bit, but it's still annoying.
The case feels durable and makes it much easier to grip. I've dropped the phone a few feet and all's well.
The little sheet of whatever that goes over the screen fits fine and seems to help protect the screen.
I don't use the camera much, but I've never noticed any interference from the case.
All in all, after about 4 months, it's still a very good case. (I've never had another one, though.)
Now for the product:
It is very bulky and will make your HTC One look twice as thick as it actually is. It's also probably a little more slippery than I would have liked - and I'm constantly worrying that it's going to slip out of my hand. I realise it's designed slippery so it doesn't attract fluff and slips in and out of pockets easily, and that's fair enough, but for the purposes of protecting your phone, there's little point in going to these lengths if the thing's going to slip out of your hand after all that, so a little bit grippier would not have been a terrible thing!
I ordered the black because the other colour schemes were just weird and not very elegant. I have the beautiful silver/white HTC One and it is really a shame to cover it up with this much blackness - especially when it's as clunky as this case is [WHY does it need to look like a caterpillar truck??]. I would have preferred perhaps a nice gunmetal grey outer-shell with a rich burgundy insert [given that it's a double case] - something elegant.
I'll grant that the case appears to be protective [I haven't dropped the phone yet thank goodness!], but aesthetically speaking, I really don't like it. It's also extremely heavy, so instead of this lovely slim telephone I bought [because among other things, it was lovely and SLIM], I'm now carrying a brick!
With so much money going into producing smartphones these days, I can't believe the lack of technologically advanced phone covers! And if they are effective, they're just dead ugly - which makes no sense given the amount of effort that goes into the aesthetics of the actual phones they're designed for!
I have to say I'm left unimpressed with the phone-cover market - they're either cute but ineffective or sturdy and ugly! Hello phone companies: put some thought into the wrapping!
Anyway, I'm going to keep looking for something that gives me a good level of protection coupled with pleasing aesthetics - which is annoying given how expensive the OtterBox was [$40 AUD!]. It is defintely [100 times!] better than the cover I bought at the time I got my phone - which was frankly more of a sheath than a protective case [our options in Australia are SERIOUSLY limited!] but it is still a long way from being satisfactory.
5 stars for Amazon's service, 3 stars for the OtterBox itself, averaged out = 4 stars over all.
