The main reason I took off a star is due to the screen film protector, it's nearly impossible to get on without at least a couple bubbles. After watching the video(which makes it look so easy) I tried it and couldn't get it to stick once i started pulling off the final layer, so I think that didn't help doing it over a couple times. Use a plastic store card(don't bend up a working credit card) over the cheap piece of junk included to help push out the bubbles. Mine has a small one near the center and some of the bottom edges have bubbles out to the edge. However the case protects these on the edge from getting worse(better than the 3GS did). As far as the protector itself, it doesn't distort the great Retina display at all, IMO. Wipes clean very easily with a microfiber cloth and a touch of water if needed.
The case fits very flush to the phone and it definetly feels protected. It isn't quite as rounded as the 3GS was, that is partially due to the phone design. I can see why some people don't like how much "bulk" it adds to the phone, it almost doubles the thickness. Not a problem for me personally. The port covers are all flush and fit like a glove and lined up absolutely perfectly. The power button is a little hard to press, it's nowhere near "impossible" like some said. I think it has loosened a little after a few weeks of usage. The charger/power port cover doesn't quite close 100% after leaving a charger on overnight, minor quibble. It fits in but is bend outwards just a little bit. Also as I read from other reviews, the $29 lightning to dock connector doesn't fit with this case(or so they say), so I had to give in and buy the stupid $39 cable version. Even the Apple store employee was like "are you sure you need this? You know it's $39 right?" I so wanted to go off on him and tell him his employer is absolutely screwing people over, but I restrained myself. That cable/adaptor fits in the charger port with this case just fine.
I also like how the opening for the camera/flash is much bigger than the tiny pinhole opening on the 3GS.
So long as you don't plan on needing the cheaper lightning/dock adaptor, this case works great and IMO is a great blend between protection and function. The defender is way too bulky and most people don't need it to be able to withstand being run over by a truck. This protects the phone yet it still slides right into your pocket easily.
I just got an iPhone SE and I thought a slimmer case like the Commuter would be fine for me. I don't need the clip that the Defender has and I wanted less bulk for my pocket so the Commuter made sense. Having just now put my SE in the case I already know I'm not happy with my purchase.
I did not have a problem installing the screen protector others mention in their reviews. It went on quick and easy with no bubbles and I centered it pretty well. I didn't even need the installation card tool they give you. I’d say it’s the same difficulty if not easier than the other ones on the market. So good job Otterbox on that issue.
The rubber part of the case went on with relative ease . It just required some minor stretching get it properly over the edges of the phone face.
The plastic outer shell is a different story and in my opinion ruins the whole product. It was a little more challenging to install. It went on with some extra effort and makes for a very snug fit which is normally fine. It really finishes the look and properly aligns the rubber part of the case. It looks very nice when the installation is complete.
However, once the installation was complete I noticed the issues others had mentioned. Perhaps the cover is a bit too snug. The Commuter does not give the familiar click I had with the Defender when using the power button on top of the phone. In fact the power button is overly rigid and difficult to push as many others have mentioned. The port covers on the bottom are easy enough to open but take a little wiggling to correctly close. I can understand how some other reviewers would complain about them being difficult to open and close. I can see them not lasting too long because they seem overly tight because of the plastic case. Although the previously mentioned issues are mildly annoying they don't even compare to the super slippery plastic cover.
The slick plastic cover is so infuriating that I'm considering returning it for a Defender and has propelled me to write a review which is not something I am prone to doing. My phone slid off my my flat desk and I didn’t touch it. Okay that didn’t happen but if my desk had a s
I strongly prefer the Defender’s rubber outer shell that provides a good gripping surface. In a side by side comparison the Commuter is only a few millimeters smaller than the Defender. The difference was scarcely noticeable. I was expecting a much smaller sized case. I was sorely disappointed by the difference.
On a positive note the touch home button is completely unobstructed by any plastic and that is a great feature. It does appear to be sturdy and it seems like it will do its job of protecting the phone. It better...because if I keep this case I see many drops in the future.
I really don’t see me keeping this case. It’s that slippery! I just have to hope Amazon lets me return it because I’ve already installed the screen protector on my phone. Amazon?
