Let me just say, if you own the Epic 4G Touch, you already know how light the phone is and how fragile it feels in your hand. I like to tell my friends that it feels "dangerously light" as if the phone is going to fly out of your hand and try to drop itself. Which to me, is a major concern, considering how clumsy I am.
The installation of the case itself couldn't have been simpler. There is a rubber soft casing, and a hard plastic casing that goes over the rubber part. Very simple and very easy to put on and off. I sometimes take it off to show friends how thin/light the phone is without the case. Now for me, the case adds grip to the phone, which I absolutely love. It adds a slight weight, which I love as well. It basically gives the phone a feel of slight heft and security. I don't feel scared to hold the phone in my hand at all with the worry of it slipping out of my hand somehow. It is perfect for adding that layer of needed protection.
The case though probably the bulkiest of the cases for this specific phone, does not add too much bulk to it. Yes it does add enough where you will notice the bulk, but to be honest this phone is huge in the first place and doesn't stretch out the size much more than that. I have pretty small hands and the same way I use the phone without the case, I use it with the case. There is a slight raise around the edges of the case so in case you do drop it, it will never land directly on the screen. Well implemented.Read more ›
I did not realize the buttons would be completely covered by the case. That was a nice surprise. Those buttons are still easy to press, since the case has little rubber protrusions that press the buttons beneath.
The ports are covered with rubber flaps that you can easily open and close. However, the case is thick enough that some headphone cables do not seat well in the headphone port. Any cable with a relatively thin jack will fit just fine, but we have one with a thick connector and it does not fit at all.
I had no luck installing the screen. As I was installing it, a speck of dust stuck to the adhesive side. I was unable to remove it, so the screen was useless. I threw it away. I imagine that will be a problem with any protective screen, though. They need to be installed by a robot in a clean room, I guess.
I am using this case with the Samsung Galaxy S II for Sprint in North America.
The Defender case was like an armoured tank, too big, bulky, and heavy. You could probably throw it off a roof and your phone won't get a scratch. It's good for construction workers and whatnot, but not for the average person for daily use.
The Ballistic was....ah allright I guess, offering good protection but light weight. I didn't much care for the big rounded corners and it was rubbery like. It didn't fit, it was too loose on my phone, I could easily lift the corner edges and I felt that if I dropped the phone it would separate from the case and break into pieces.
The Commuter case is perfection for my phone. It has an inner rubbery like silicone layer which you place the phone in and a separate hard plastic like polycarbonate outer shell which you place over on top of the inner layer providing excellent protection. The inner layer covers over the edges of the screen just right so they don't interfere with the icons and notifications tray, you have full easy access to all the controls, pressing and swiping and whatnot, unlike the Defender. Having the hard plastic outer layer also makes it easy to put it in and take it out of your pocket without it getting stuck, unlike the cases that are rubber, and no dust and lint stick on it. Included is also one of those clear plastic screen protectors, useful for protecting the screen from scratches from keys, loose change and whatnot, but it's a pain in the butt to put it on the phone. You have to be a surgeon to be able to get it on just right, without fingerprints, dust and bubbles getting stuck underneath.Read more ›
