Perhaps the altered sync. & headphone port access areas & plugs were changed to accomodate charging to docks that were previously unable to be used, I don't know. It just looks like cost-cutting to me. I too have docks I couldn't use with the Defender cases so I bit the bullet & purchased a Cable Jive cable that worked great. CableJive dockXtender Premium Extension Cable for iPhone, iPod, iPad (6 foot black) They are relatively costly, but they enable hand-held use of the device while docked which can't be done with the device physically docked.
The inner hard shell case snapped together perfectly with a little effort (if it isn't seated together properly the silicone outer shell won't fit correctly) & also noticed that the finished edges of the hard shell had a crude look in spots, like the mold was made in a hurry. Also it doesn't have the projecting protrusions that the soft shell fit into like the 3G case for itouch. Perhaps they were purported to transfer shock to the ipod & were eliminated because of that, I don't know, I only know that it was a good way to keep the soft shell in place. I don't know if the soft shell stays in place because I didn't leave it on very long. It seemed ok, but might shift over time.
I can't comment much on the built-in screen protector because the case wasn't on the ipod 4G long enough to tell. Touch sensitivity seemed fine as usual & the 4G's screen showed up fine. Our 3G cases' screen covers have worked flawlessly.
All in all the case just seemed inferior to the earlier models. I won't bore you further, but I came to the conclusion that I couldn't keep the case as it was, so I contacted Amazon & their computer immediately sent me a return authorization & shipping label, returned at my expense, but I can't complain about that, I should have investigated the case more thoroughly before ordering it. At lease I got Super Saver shipping one way. I looked further for cases (there are a lot, but not many with the Defender protection) and found the Smile cases. Smile Case Full Protection Case Black on Pink for iPod Touch 4 4G iTouch 4 4G with Belt Clip Holster (it-Black on Pink) This pink/black one has several views of the case, unlike the pics of the Otterbox. These look amazingly like the Otterbox Defender case for our 3G itouches with the additional holes for cameras, etc. & the projecting pieces to keep the silicone shell in place. It also comes with a beltclip/front protector. I probably won't use the clip as I like to be very sure of my toy's safety, I usully carry it in a bag. I have ordered this & have high hopes for it. I will write a review after I have received it & tried it out. I hope this review of the Otterbox Defender case for iTouch 4G has been of use. Thanks for reading.
This case is wonderful. It's nowhere near as bulky as most reviews say, but it does a great job of protecting the ipod. There is a plastic screen cover that you can't even tell is there because it doesn't affect my finger sliding abilities what so ever, but it's obviously doing it's job. The case is basically a very hard, protective cover with a silicone overwrap. It does a very good job of creating enough room for the cameras, which are unprotected for good reason. This case is expensive, but I guarantee you that you will see that it is the best case out there. I have full confidence that I could drop my iPod in this case 100+ times on a hard surface, and it would not be affected whatsoever.
As for any potential negatives, there are none. There are some slight annoyances though which do not degrade the product whatsoever unless you are very nit picky. There are flaps for the headphone jack and charging slot which do stay in fine, but are kind of annoying when you have to remove one of them to listen to headphones. When I see the flap up like that, it just doesn't look completely right. Also, since the case has a border of slightly raised elevation around the screen, it is sometimes more difficult to hit buttons that are on the very edges of the screen, or to move apps from one screen to the other. It's very do-able and is hardly annoying, but it's something I guess. Sound horrible? I didn't think so. That's about all I can say that's negative about the product.
This product is amazing, I only say the negative aspects so that you take this as a realistic review instead of an "OMG I LOVE THIS PRODUCT BUY IT NOW" review. So if you want the best for your iPod touch, fork out the money for this. Just compare it to the money you spend when you take your significant other to dinner one night and pay for it (even if you're a girl, just imagine). It's well worth the investment
