I purchased a used N900 on CL a few weeks ago and fell in love with the phone. However, it had a scratch on the screen and there was wear and tear on the body. If it were just an Iclone, I would have kept it but this was a N900. So I sold the old phone and bought a new N900 from Amazon.
While I was waiting for the phone, I knew I had to get a case for it. I read the reviews and complaints and settled for the Otterbox. I have not been disappointed. This case is exactly what a phone case should do. It protects the phone. I wasn't wild about the protective covering. No real complaints but you have to be a zen master to get it on without prints or bubbles. I ordered the Zagg Shield screen protector and I'm good to go.
First of all, it DOES NOT make the phone bulky. Yes, it increases the size of the phone but the N900 in the Otterbox is still as small as a pack of cigarettes and thinner as well. There's no need to run out and practice PX90 for 6 months to use this phone. Come on, it's a cell phone. Watch mid 90s movies when people are making calls on their portable phones, now that's BULKY.
The case is durable and well made. Access to some things is a little tricky but that's because of the N900 design. For example, the stylus is designed to be flush with the body so it's trickier to get at with a case. But it's not difficult. All of the openings are easily accessible and it uses a rubberized coating for the side opposite the screen so the case doesn't scratch the phone. All in all, a good product.

Let's start with the 'cons':
CONS:
Makes a big phone bigger.
Headphone opening may not be big enough for you.
Top half of case impinges a little on top row of keyboard.
Very hard to pry off the back. Makes it hard to access SIM, battery and SD card.
'Lock' switch hard to reach with case on.
Screen protector covers front camera, cutting down light and blurring image a little.
PROS:
Good protection from drops and scrapes.
Screen protector works well. Perhaps it's improved over earlier versions. 'Installation card' is actually a little squeegee for smoothing out bubbles, etc. It works well.
Stays firmly attached to phone.
MicroUSB and speaker openings work fine. Button protectors protect without interfering with function.
Camera lens ully accessible.
'Kick stand' works as well as without case, but that's not a huge 'plus'.
Since you can set the power switch to lock on double click, the lock switch isn't rewally critical . . .
Case is hard outside with soft rubber inside and port covers. Surface is smooth, but not quite same texture as phone. As noted in 'Cons', not all audio/video cables will fit in the headphone port with case on.
It is easier to just puzzle out how to apply the screen protector than to try to follow he pictogram instructions - don't fear, you'll figure it out. Included card/squeegee is helpful with bubbles.
If you swap SD cards a lot, the back will be a big hassle for you.

I think Otterbox makes some of the best phone cases, and this one is no exception.
They have 2 lines: the High Impact, and the Commuter versions.
The High Impact, which I have for my Nokia 5800, is all rubber. Very high quality, but also adds a lot of mass and bulk. And since rubber is non-slip, it can be a pain to retrieve out of your pockets while in certain positions (ahem, like while driving).
So this Commuter version is a better alternative (I don't think they have a High Impact version for the N900 yet).
This version is made of high quality plastic, which a thin inner rubber lining on the bottom side (opposite of the screen side), to protect the phone from short falls and small knocks.
It fits into the phone very nicely and securely - very little creaks and give from loose spaces.
In fact, you will find it very hard to pop it out when you have to replace a SIM card or battery (but there is a trick to get it to open easily, which is hard to describe, so you'll have to find it on your own).
It doesn't add much bulk to the phone, and ultimately, gives you a great peace of mind, which is what it's all about.
The only small negative about it (like any other case for phones with big screens), is that there is no way it can protect the screen side from falls onto bumpy or angled surfaces.

The box itself is coated with silicon/rubber on the inside giving great shock absorption. It snaps on very well, not difficult. It does not eliminate any exterior buttons or ports, everything is accounted for and protected.
Some people have written that the plastic hurts your ear while talking, but it doesn't hurt mine, just was uncomfortable the first few times using it until I got used to it. It does take some getting used to when typing on the QWERTY with this case on, but only took a day or two to adjust (I have large fingers). Am now typing commands in the xterm no problem!
The screen protector was a disaster (reason for only 4 stars). After applying, the applicator tab did not come off very easily and left a residue on the protector. I ended up just peeling it off, throwing it away, and using a different screen protector (looks like the phone comes with its own as well).
Only recommendation I can give Otterbox is that I wish the box was shiny like the phone, would keep the phone looking classy.
Overall, great case, it does an awesome job protecting the n900. I feel like my phone is nearly indestructible with this case on it and with very negligible compromises (keyboard, ear piece, etc).

Brilliant case

Comes with screen protector, back case with silicon lining, and front clip on frame.
This is an excellent protective case for the N900 and I love the silicon covers that cover the ports and control buttons.
Pros:
-Easy to fit
-Offers good protection (I haven't dropped it to test but it does look quite tough and there's a silicon lining inside the plastic case)
-Looks good (I think it makes the N900 look better!)
Cons:
-Adds a bit of bulk to your N900
-If you normally attach a wrist strap to your N900 then this won't work for you as the hole for the wrist strap is covered by the otterbox case.

Otterbox for Nokia N900
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on November 14, 2011
Had my last leather case for about 14 months.
got this one as I had my last phone replace dunder warranty.
Have to say it improves the feel and touch of the phone. I like the fact that everything is accessible as though no cover. Have not dropped the phone too much just yet but it feels sturdy and capable of some big impacts.
Most people have commented on the style of this and when I upgrade next year ( waiting for Galaxy S3 or windows nokia ) will definitely source this make.
