Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this sunlit book about two exploring otter pups, "Arnosky's watercolor illustrations deftly entice even reluctant, landlocked readers into his aquatic world," said PW. Ages 3-6. (July)
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-- In the footsteps of Arnosky's other simple nature books--Deer at the Brook (1986), Come Out , Muskrats (1989), Racoons and Ripe Corn (1987), Watching Foxes (1984, all Lothrop)--comes this charming, true-to-life glimpse of two young otters swimming, playing, and feeding in a sunlit pond under the watchful gaze of their mother. As always, this naturalist author/artist has enhanced the basic lesson through his inclusion of plants, creatures, and rock formations that form a part of the animals' natural habitat. His carefully executed colored-pencil and watercolor illustrations, all unbordered double-page spreads, reflect his keen observations of nature and his fine artistic talent. Each of his creatures exhibits a distinct individualism, adding character to the realistic scenes. The short, simple, oversized text, one sentence or phrase to a page, succinctly describes the pictured activity without detracting from the eye-catching view. This slim volume will appeal to beginning readers and is a delightful lap book for preschoolers as well. --Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Pub. Lib . , OH

My son loves Otters and after checking this book out multiple times from the Library, we got it for him as a Christmas present. The artwork really sells the idea of a warm lazy afternoon in the stream, and the the story and text used tells a nice, simple and almost poetic story. Great for nighttime reading to ease a little one into sleep or for anytime. The library binding makes it a very solid book, one that could go through many hands, or be hung onto as a keepsake to pass to ones own children.

I ordered this along with some plush otters for grandkids under 3 yrs as they like the otters at the zoo. The watercolors in the book are very pretty, the story is nice and simple to introduce young children to the otter and some other water animals. I'm pleased with the book, as are the grandkids and their parents.

Otters are some of my favorite creatures. I love learning from Jim Arnosky about underwater life whether in the sea or in fresh water, his lovely, refreshingly true-to-life paintings give the reader an impression of his love of the animals that he so carefully portrays. Great for K-3 but readers of all readers will enjoy the story and illustrations. Sybil Blazej, Librarian, artist, children's book author and a dog walker
