Oakland, California-based band The Heavenly States' new album entitled Oui Camera Oui is a 7-track EP presenting photographs from a PTSD decade. Produced by the band with Bill Lefler (Gym Class Heroes) and mixed by John Agnello (The Hold Steady, Sonic Youth), Oui is a collection of intense fragments of experience from a dystopian America, offering images culled from American trauma, overheard business disputes, misremembered events, moments captured in medias res, and an overarching moral ambiguity. True to its punk nature, the band continues to ingeniously use a simple everyday vocabulary to paint complex sonic and conceptual landscapes. Telescoped into an EP, these qualities have an amped intensity. The EP also features special guest appearances by friends and fans Britt Daniel of Spoon, and underground comic icon Eugene Mirman (also of Flight of the Conchords). This is the VINYL version - there is a CD version that is also available.
As panoramic as the work of such larger-than-life rock storytellers as The Who. --Magnet

Highlights are 'Model Son', 'Berlin Wall' and the title track - simply gorgeous, fantastic songs. 'Berlin Wall' (which at 2.34 minutes feels way too short) features lead vocals by Spoon's Britt Daniel who's apparently a big fan of the band, and it's easy to hear why. I think any fan of Spoon would also find much to enjoy in the music of The Heavenly States.
By the way, track seven, 'Careful With That Review Eugene', is a guy called Eugene reading some truly awful (and I presume real) reviews of releases by The Heavenly States. So, it's not an actual song but it's pretty funny stuff, at least the first couple of times anyway.
