"Our Grandpa Was an Alien" is a personal memoir of author Ms. Hayes, from childhood up to the point where she becomes a parent. Particularly for those readers who grew up in Southern California , the recollections of growing up in Pasadena and the San Fernando Valley in a time before the 210 Freeway was built are wonderful. She and her family experienced the 1971 Sylmar earthquake firsthand - I remember it myself, and we felt it though we lived in Orange County, far from the epicenter. I can only imagine what it was like to experience it in Sunland.
Her descriptions of her neighbors, parents, grandparents and siblings are keenly observed and warmhearted, and I also enjoyed the chapter about the best teacher she ever had (a standout elementary school teacher). As she moves into adulthood we learn about life in the Air Force, working in telecommunications and her experience of falling in love. Overall this book is readable and enjoyable and nicely balances character portraits with personal experiences. I recommend it if you like memoirs, or just plain good writing.
