Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-A joyful celebration of the Earth with the important environmental message that we share the planet not only with all the various people of the world, but with the plant and animal worlds as well. The loosely rhymed poem describes water, sun, soil, air, wind, sky, night, and moon and serves as a breezy introduction to ecological interdependence. Kleven's colorful artwork is full of subtle detail and depicts children and adults playing, dancing, relaxing, and working all over the world-from the African plain to a Caribbean island to a South American mountain. The artist uses an effective mix of media, from collage to chalk, to portray depth of scenes and vibrancy of detail. A lively look at "-our big blue-green, growing-sun-warmed-life-giving-precious living home."-Rosie Peasley, Empire Union School District, Modesto, CA

From Booklist

Gr. 2^-3, younger for reading aloud. Kleven wreathes Glaser's rhymed celebration of our commonalities--water, dirt, sun and moon, wind, sky, dark, being alive--with cascades of leaves and flowers, stars, kites, and clouds, placing a multicultural cast of dancing children (plus occasional adults who look like slightly taller children) in a succession of rolling, bountiful landscapes and seascapes. Though less-than-stellar production has left the colors slightly dulled, the illustrations are still vibrant with joie de vivre, and the text is a natural for reading aloud: "Great sweeps of blue, / dabs and swirls of clouds, / wild splashes at sunset. / Wherever we are, / we look up and see sky, sky, sky." A lyrical cousin to such consciousness raisers as Frank Asch's The Earth and I (1994) or Nancy Leunn's Mother Earth (1992). John Peters

Linda Glaser has fond childhood memories of snuggling next to her mother and being read to. She's grateful that because of this, she grew up with a strong love of books even though she had a terrible time learning to read. When she finally mastered it in third grade, she immediately grabbed a pen and pad and started to write. And she hasn't stopped since. She loves how time evaporates when she writes. She also loves the feeling of being captured by a good book and hopes her readers will have that experience when they open one of her hers. Please visit her website www.LindaGlaserAuthor.com
