It is told through the voice of Harmony, a young girl who’s mother has been deployed overseas with the US Army. We follow Harmony throughout the day and see how the her dad and brother adjust and manage together. Although Harmony misses her mother, young readers are reassured with practical advice sprinkled throughout the book.
“Often times, my brother and I miss out mommy so much! When we get like this, we look at pictures, read her letters and talk about her with family and friends.”
Johnson has been the Media Specialist at an elementary school for the past nine years. As a teacher she encourages her students to read a variety of books, participate in sports, and is a voracious reader of books of all genres. I asked her why she decided to write this book.
“My cousin is in the military but the book was mainly inspired by my a few of my students who deal with parent who is deployed. Many of characters are a combination of children of friends and families.”
In the back of the book are ways children can help a classmate who has a deployed family member: helping the family with daily chores, sending care packages to the deployed military member, and being a kind friend.
