About the Author

Father Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, O.P., was born in 1877 and is held as one of the greatest Catholic theologians of the twentieth century. He focused his writings against the error of Modernism, which denied the objective truth of Divine revelation, as well as on apologetics, including philosophy. In total, he authored over five hundred books and articles, and wrote as a thorough Thomist. Among Father Garrigou-Lagrange s numerous works are The Three Ages of the Interior Life, Christian Perfection and Contemplation, Christ the Savior, and God, His Existence and Nature. He died in 1964.

Get to Know Jesus Your Savior

I am currently engaged in my second reading of this masterful work. Father Garrigou-Lagrange's prayerful insight into the Savior's interior life comes from a rich, scholarly contemplation of the Hypostatic Union, and how the divine nature ministers grace to human nature for the sublime cause of our salvation, with both natures cooperating in flawless unison through the divine Person of the Word.

The discussion on meritorious works, and how a Christian's merit derives from Christ's infinite merit, especially helped clear up misunderstandings which came about during my Protestant formation. The chapter on the Eucharist shows how Jesus' sacrifice draws us into the Trinitarian communion of charity by the total offering of Himself (in the fullness of both His human and divine natures) to the Father, redeeming fallen man, saving us and bringing us--via His Sacred Humanity--into the Holy of Holies! This book lays down the unshakeable basis of the Mass as Sacrifice, as the ultimate expression of God's self-giving love for sinful man, and as man's only, reasonable response to God.

Just a wonderful, theologically solid read, faithful to the Church's doctrine; a work that inspires further contemplation and adoration of God for His miraculous work of salvation. Your heart will be bursting with prayers of profound thanksgiving, penance and worship as you read this book, expressions of gratitude which are never enough to match the supreme graciousness and generosity of God.

Theologians and authors like Father Garrigou-Lagrange make me so very glad and so very thankful that I converted to the Roman Catholic Faith!

Father Garrigou-Lagrange has given us a masterpiece in hi work "Our Saviour and His Love for us." Although the title of the book makes it sound like it is book on just spirituality, this is simply not the case. Much of Part I is devoted to apologetics which defend the divinity of Christ. This is evidenced through a careful reading of texts in the gospels, the writings of Paul, and Old testament texts as well. With his divinity established, much of the rest of the book is devoted to the theology of Christ. His wills, natures, his humility, his merit, etc. There is much to learn here, and it is more readable and pithy than, say, attempting to read Aquinas. This would be an excellent place to start before attempting to dive into Part III of the Summa.
