Editorial Reviews

Review

"I would call it a 'classic' sexuality book with cutting-edge content. I love how it addresses politics, particularly in chapters on contraception." Dianne Kerr, Kent State University

"OUR SEXUALITY has proved to be the perfect text for my undergraduate course on human sexuality. It is well-structured, formatted, and presented, with interesting sidelines alongside the expected and necessary information. This is the text that you have been fantasizing about." David Yarbrough, University of Louisiana, Lafayette

"Crooks and Baur provide a readable text that provides students with a solid understanding of human sexuality. The content is neither salacious nor prudish but instead is a forthright presentation of relevant topics. The text sheds light on relevant themes in the study of sexuality while simultaneously providing specifics on more concrete topics like sex research and anatomy." Chris B. Current, Walla Walla University

About the Author

The integration of psychological, social, and biological components of human sexuality in this text is facilitated by the authors' combined academic and professional backgrounds. Robert Crooks has a Ph.D. in psychology. His graduate training stressed clinical and physiological psychology, and he has considerable background in sociology. His involvement with teaching human sexuality classes at the university, college, and medical school levels spans over two decades. Bob and his wife, Sami Tucker, have been involved in the establishment and implementation of HIV/AIDS intervention programs in two areas of Kenya, one in the central region and one in a coastal area. Over the previous 12 years their work with these projects includes designing a research strategy for assessing behavior change, developing a peer educator-based educational strategy, and conducting training sessions for Kenyan peer educator staff. Over many years they have traveled to African frequently and devoted many months to the evolving Kenyan programs.

Karla Baur has a master's degree in social work; her advanced academic work stressed clinical training. She is a licensed clinical social worker in private practice, specializing in couples and sex therapy. Karla has provided clinical supervision, seminars, and lectures for other mental health therapists and professional groups. She has taught human sexuality and female sexuality classes at Portland Community College, Portland State University, and Clark College. At Oregon Health Sciences University she taught a human sexuality course and coached medical students in taking sexual histories with patients. Karla was also involved in a six-week program in Kenya to train HIV/AIDS Prevention Peer Educators. She has been certified as a sex educator, therapist, and sex therapy supervisor by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. She is currently developing a play about the nuances and complexities of male sexuality with her collaborator, composer/writer Fred Strong.

Most textbooks I've read are tediously boring, but this one is definitely an exception. I used this during a 3-week intense summer class, and I LOVED this book. Maybe it's because I'm a pervert, maybe not, but this book is extremely interesting. In fact, it is one of the few I did not sell after using it. I would highly recommend this!

Some of use may take the class for GE or random credit. For some classes you can get by without the book, and yes, for most general human sexuality courses you can get by without the text. However, this text is extremely well thought out and articulate. It provides good insight into contemporary sexual issues and explores vast controversial issues with surprisingly adequate depth.

I’m not a student, just a married guy interested in learning more about human sexuality. This book definitely delivers. It covers a wide range of topics, expanding my knowledge on all aspects of sexuality. I was amazed by how rapidly some sexual practice have evolved. I was surprised by many of the studies and other facts that are included. Most importantly I gain a new appreciation for the need for direct, honest communication between partners. For guys, learning to listen more and accept feedback on how to improve the sexual experience of a partner. Changing your approach, speed, touch, etc. may vastly increase your partner’s desire for sex and ability to achieve multiple orgasms. For women, openly share your preferences and provide specific feedback on what works best for you. Faking orgasms only encourages the wrong behavior. For both partners, be willing to explore a variety of sensual and sexual experiences including some you feel are taboo, sharing what works best, what changes might help and what you don’t want to do again. Any behavior between consenting adults that produces pleasure should be embraced and repeated. By the end of the book, my wife and I had several meaningful conversations on how to improve our relationship of many years. I hope you have a similar experience with your significant other.

This text is an excellent resource to cover all things about sex. It covers even those taboo subjects other text may shy away from. The personal stories are wonderful, the graphics and pictures are well-place, colorful and applicable. A resource to keep around.

Very informative text book that was required for a course that I was taking. Price was steep for a used copy. But content was varied and diverse...covering normal human sexuality and social sex crimes and societal practices across many countries and continents. Timeless information. I was able to return book for amazon credit which was nice and easy.

This is the textbook selection for my Psychology of Human Sexuality class. Not only does it provide enough information and read easy, it provides critical thinking questions (and an amazing online study guide). I think I will hold onto this textbook instead of selling it back.

Very interesting book. I definitely would not have bought it if my school did not require me to, though. I did learn quite a bit, however! Definitely not for the squeamish, though as some of the content is VERY graphic.

Surprisingly easy to read and I found it very interesting as well. It had a good flow and really enriched the class it was required for. The loose leaf binding is not fun to mess with especially if you need to re-sell the book when you are done but other than that this book was decent.
