- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2022I really enjoyed reading this book. As someone who hikes in the Smokey Mountains this book talks about trails I have hiked including the trail named after the author. There are stories about how the area was during Kepharts life and how he lived and went from here to there. You can read about hunting and moonshine and stories about families in the area. I am also familiar with some of the tails in the book

- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2010I was really happy to be able to get a copy of Our Southern Higlanders for my library. I had read it via books.google.com but it is so good I wanted one for the shelf.
The new edition is easy to read, the pictures are adequate reproductions, and the forward really adds to the book
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2009Eventhough written many decades ago, the book is still current since things change so slowly in the mountains. I found it very interesting with many unusual facts about mountain people. The downside is that it is presented much like a textbook history lesson. Also the included photos were generally of such low quality as to be near useless; however, this does not really detract from the information given. I would recommend this book to anyone curious about the roots, beliefs, etc. of the southern mountain people as it is very thorough.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2012If you are interested in the highlanders of Western North Carolina, this book is for you. Written in 1922, it has much detail concerning the lives of these special people. Many great narratives of their personal experiences. Mr Kephart is an excellent writer and provides great depth in his knowledge of the highlanders. His writing just flows. He combines history with an almost poetic style of writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2017A wonderful boot on the Appalachian people, and the histories, legends, and ways of life. Has a good sense of humor, dosed with some fine old mountain ways of doin. A great read for any one who is interested in the Appalachian region.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2020I had to throw away this book. There were continually pages missing. I purchased the book from a book store and loved the book itself but not this badly copied version. This book in this form should not be sold.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2010This is a delightfully written study of the people of the Southern Appalachians. A lot of it is written in the actual vernacular of the mountain people and attests to the strength of character that was necessary for survival in this often harsh and beautiful environment. A must-have for any historical collection.
