There are stories about how the area was during Kepharts life and how he lived and went from here to there. You can read about hunting and moonshine and stories about families in the area.     Eventhough written many decades ago, the book is still current since things change so slowly in the mountains. I found it very interesting with many unusual facts about mountain people. The downside is that it is presented much like a textbook history lesson. Also the included photos were generally of such low quality as to be near useless; however, this does not really detract from the information given. I would recommend this book to anyone curious about the roots, beliefs, etc. of the southern mountain people as it is very thorough.

    If you are interested in the highlanders of Western North Carolina, this book is for you. Written in 1922, it has much detail concerning the lives of these special people. Many great narratives of their personal experiences. Mr Kephart is an excellent writer and provides great depth in his knowledge of the highlanders. His writing just flows. He combines history with an almost poetic style of writing.
