"Our Vietnam Nightmare" by Margaerite Higgens Takes us back to 1955 and mostly 1960 to 1963. I remember President Diem as an evil man and Ho Chi Min as the George Washington of his country. Ms. Higgins point is that it was almost the reverse. Ho knew how to use the American and European {Occidental} press against Diem. Most reporters never left Saigon and didn't know that the South Vietnamese with American advisors were winning the war and the hearts and minds of the people. Millions of people left North Vietnam after the French left in 1954. They didn't like the communist system of dividing the land, putting all young men in the army and desrimination against religion mostly Catholic. President Kennedy was not getting good advice. The military liked Diem the Ambassador and other civilians didn't and they won. Diem and his brother were shot dead right bsfore Kennedy. Johnson also favored Diem against the Vietnamese generals.

Writing about VN during the time the country was divided is like writing about an elephant with your eyes blindfolded. You cannot tell all about it, especially writing the truthfulness of each aspect of it. Higgins did not tell the whole story (who could?), but at least she did tell the truthfulness of several aspects about VN during the time she covered. She had guts and powerful will to go against the current of the press which I respect her most. That is the difference between the hero and a bunch of villains. Who are the villains? You can find them in her book. It is worth every penny to purchase and time to read her book. I had lived through, heard most of what she wrote, and amazed about her ability to find out even as a foreigner.

Seldom do you come across a book of this quality...in terms of cogent analysis.
Vietnam was my time as a young man ( Vietnam era veteran ) I remember the nightly news blasting away at our senses/radicals burning/marching in the streets. I have 2 dozen + books on Vietnam on my shelf. Somehow - I missed this book. The author, ms Higgins was there and recorded what she saw, heard from those who were involved everyday. She was a War corespondent who was so highly respected that the political doors were opened too her. She takes us back to the foundation of the what was working and what went wrong in Vietnam. This is the book that filled in that part of history that I was missing. This is arguably the best of the best read on that early period up to 1965 in Vietnam. In my view, a must read.

I was only fifteen years old when "Our Vietnam Nightmare" was published. Four years later I was fighting in Vietnam. Until I finished reading this book I don't think I fully understood how the war escalated and how much the press/news services opinion (rather than facts) played into the decision to overthrow the Diem Regime. Although the book is over fifty years old, it should be dusted off and read by everyone to understand the dangers of how an irresponsible media played into a twentieth century disaster.

I saw a promo for this book when I was a member of the Conservative Book Club twenty years ago, and I passed it over, but I made a mental note. Then I saw it referenced in Barry Goldwater's personal memoirs (titled, "With No Apologies"), and I decided to get it.

This book, plus Goldwater's, shines a large amount of light on the question: "Who has really been pulling the strings in American military and foreign policy over the past 50 years (or more)?" A casual reading of one or the other of these books may lead one to agree wtih the traditional boilerplate American conflict between "Republican" and "Democrats" or "Conservatives" and "Liberals". However, taken together, and in the light of other research, it becomes obvious there are forces much larger at work "behind the curtain" of media deceptiion.

This book is a must-read for those wishing to get deeper into the motivations of the good and evil men in the world.
