- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2022I simply cannot rave enough about this incredible masterpiece of a children’s book enough. I am telling everyone I know about it and buying them as gifts. First saw it as a new release at the library. The message centers on immigration, inclusivity & kindness. But the eloquence and thoughtful presentation for young minds is its most impressive feat! Like seriously wow. (And I read a lot of kids books; for reference my daughter is 4.) The illustrations are also wonderful and very appealing. So many details, colors, faces, different languages and extras. This book ought to win every award out there this year! This is easily my favorite book since All Are Welcome. BUY THREE. Trust me.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2022Our World is a Family provides an accessible look at migration and refuge-seeking for young children. That said, as an adult I learned a lot from the words and pictures in this book too. The book explains to readers how we can be welcoming neighbors to our new community members who have just experienced migration - even if we don't have a shared language.
There are ample opportunities to engage with little readers throughout the book, too. When we read the part about saying hello with a smile or a wave, my almost 3yo does it himself :)
The illustrations are so beautiful, combining both illustrated words and pictures to tell the story. The people represented are so diverse, demonstrating how there are all types of people around the world who all need to feel Safe, Loved, and Important.
I love reading this book to my kid and know you will, too!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2022This is such an important book! Miry and Jennifer write a compassionate and age appropriate book about welcoming families who have to leave their home and immigrate to a new place. I love that the authors provide concrete ways for children to welcome families that have been displaced from their home. the illustrations are joyful and characters adorable. the story includes people of different faiths and cultures, people who speak different languages and even people who move differently. Our World Is a Family offers parents and educators an age appropriate way to explain and talk about families who resettle in the United States as refugees.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2022This book is beautifully written and gorgeously illustrated. It has provided gentle conversation starters and ongoing touchpoints for our family with a 7 and 9 year old. We try not to make a secret of things happening in the world, but do try to find ways to discuss things in a non-scary way. As our kids grow older and hear more fragments from kids at school, it has never felt more important to us to make sure these conversations are happening at home. (I bought an extra copy for each of their teachers!) Thank you to Miry, Jennifer and Nomar for this beautiful book and helpful communication tool.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2022Love how this book teaches young kids how to care for other people both alike and different from themselves. It explains to them that sometimes when people move they can be scared and afraid. Moving may not have been out of choice, but necessity to live a better life. It shows that just because we come from different places, we can celebrate our differences. Being kind doesn't have to be hard and can be as simple as a gesture and just making someone else feel comfortable in their new surroundings. This book will be one that we read over and over again. I can only hope that it helps not only my daugther, but other kids reading to be decent and kind human beings and to bring compassion and understanding to everyone they meet.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2022This is just a seriously cool book. I had heard the author interviewed on NPR, and she’s also amazing. The book is clear language for kids to understand a reugee’s situation, and offers empathy and compassion. Another cool perk: the inside of the removable cover is a colorful poster of how to say many welcoming words in other languages - and not just Western European ones either. Once you take the cover off, the hardcover book still has its original, colorful cover. This book is so great, I’ve continued to reorder for all of my friends’ kids, and for adult friends who may want to gift it. A gem, imho.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2022Anyone looking for a simple introduction to why families relocate to new homes in unfamiliar places should pick up a copy of this book by the founder of Miry's List (a nonprofit organization that helps refugee families resettle in the U.S.). The book begins by pointing out that families live in a variety of places and speak many different languages around the world, but sometimes conditions become unsafe and they must find a new home. It shares the long journeys, leaving behind possessions or even relatives, and arriving tired and unsure in a different place. But then it moves into how we can help a new neighbor to feel welcome and settle in - things as simple as a smile, a wave, or a housewarming gift.
Illustrations throughout the book depict families of many backgrounds and cultures. Even the endpapers are covered with the phrase, "I am here" in various languages. The unsafe conditions are represented by scenes such as families being rescued from a flood or children waving to each other from their windows because they can't go out to play - there are no horrific details that would be too frightening for young readers. The characters themselves have a wide range of skin tones, clothing, and other distinguishing features. The visual presentation along with the text make the entire book feel welcoming and supportive.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2022Our church is sponsoring an Afghan family who has been resettled here. This book is so lovely and well-written and has prompted really good little conversations with my kids (4 & 6) about what it means to leave home to build a new life. Also, with all the talk of Ukraine in the news (and at school too apparently) this was an unexpectedly timely resource to talk about that as well. Beautiful book!
