This author knows how to craft a story, revealing tidbits of a secret on one page, a dramatic twist a few chapters later, subtle hints of what's to come - everything that makes a reader say, "Just one more chapter and then I'll sleep/do laundry/feed the cat, etc." And the conflict! The challenging family dynamics in this story - father/son, father/daughter, mother/daughter and more - could make your head spin, and most readers will be able to relate to this in some way.
Jensen's relationship with his father is strained at best, and with Bella, a young attorney learning to assert her independence, he finds common ground. The two are determined to learn the secrets behind the suspicious parole of the person responsible for his sister's death.
If you're a fan of family drama, this series is for you. Now to move on to the third book!
What follows is a page-turning tale of family members at odds, incredible characters who demand a spot in your heart. Troilo fills her story with father-son relationships, father-daughter relationships, sibling relationships, mother-daughter, friends and old acquaintances—they’re all here, each portrayed as if you knew them personally. You can’t help but become emotionally invested in the trials they go through.
Royce and Victor are each domineering patriarchs to be reckoned with. Yet their children are equally strong, challenging the paths and ideas that were preconceived for them. How everyone manages through the interconnecting turbulence is a whirlwind ride filled with drama, romance, mystery and an intriguing amount of detective work. I can only hope there will be a book 3 in this wonderful series!
" Out and About" s story line flows from " Type and Cross" to allow the reader to know' what happened after' . I'd like to go back to Cathedral Lake to visit again and will if there's a book 3 .
This second book focuses on the son, Jensen Keller, whereas book one had more focus on the parents. We also meet the Perish family and, believe me, you will hate the father at first read. To make a character real enough to hate with passion takes skill and craft, and I applaud the author for her achievement here. Only a very few characters remain vague, with most of them (and especially the main ones) jumping to lively and vivid life.
This is as much of a page turner as the first book, Type and Cross, and I can't wait to feast my eyes on the third book, Pride and Fall.
In Out and About, Jensen's sister's killer gets released on parole amidst strange circumstances, and Jensen becomes determined to get to the bottom of why. While the story treats us to an account of repression, revelation, bravery, and contrition, it also brings us love and patience and forgiveness.
If you like family sagas and dramas, then you will love this series from author Staci Troilo. A strong five stars from me.
