Editorial Reviews
Throughout his five decades in music, Johnny Cash was unwavering in his dedication to his sound and style. Starting with Sun Records in 1955 through his days at Columbia and beyond, Cash always knew exactly what he wanted to do and exactly how it should sound. Everything he did, all the music he created was definitively Johnny Cash. By 1980, the business of country music had changed to incorporate sounds that were incongruous with Cash's. His signature blend of folk and that 'boom-chicka-boom' beat was out of vogue amongst the slick string-laden 'countrypolitan' sounds that had become popular. This shift left all-time greats like Cash in the odd place of being revered, but not selling albums. In one effort to enhance his commercial appeal, Columbia Records paired Cash with producer Billy Sherrill who was having major success with this new country sound. While Sherrill selected many of the songs, it was Cash's trademark sound that dominated. The sessions were nothing short of magic. Cash employed an expanded band, featuring a young Marty Stuart on guitar and fiddle as well as long-time duet partners June Carter Cash and Waylon Jennings. Much of what was recorded was locked away in the vault - lost and not to be heard again. Until now. Discovered in 2012, OUT AMONG THE STARS is truly a lost, previously unreleased Johnny Cash album. These aren't alternate takes or different versions of songs that you've heard. These are brand new songs to the Cash canon. Completed in 2013 by Johnny's only son John Carter Cash, OUT AMONG THE STARS is a pivotal Johnny Cash album lost in time, and now ready to become a classic.

Cash teams with Billy Sherill, a master of 1980s country and, together they spin magic. This album has it all:
Cash the rockabilly? Check. Cash laces his rockabilly shoes back on with a rousing rocking version of "Rock and Roll Shoes"
Cash the duet partner? Check. He teams with his onetime roommate, Waylon lemmings, and his current roommate, June Carter Cash, for album highlights - "Baby Ride Easy" is a spirited, fun song in the vein of the classic "Jackson" and "Don't You Think Its Come Our Time" is a beautiful piece of poetry that sounds like it could have been recorded in the early 1970s at the height of Cashmania.
Cash the black hole of music? Check. The dark, brooding Cash that would become so prominent in the "American recordings" years is present in "She Used to Love Me a Lot," next to which David Allen Coe's hit version of the same era is lightweight.
Cash the comedian? Check. "If I Told You Who It Was" is funny and has a heck of a surprise ending and right of the most famous trademarked words of any country superstar to close the song out.
The dark humor of the prison albums? Check. "I Drove Her Out of my Mind" could sit alongside "A Boy Named Sue."
Cash the patriot? Check. Cash's version of the beautiful "Tennessee" is a heartfelt homage to his adopted home state.
Cash the gospel singer? Check. "I Came to Believe" is a powerful testament to faith.
Every song on the album is stronger than anything getting radio airplay in the 80s. Cash is pitch perfect and spot on. As you listen, you are reminded why Sherrill was so effective at what he did - he could find the best songs and then draw the best they could offer from them. I thank The Lord that Billy Sherrill crossed paths with Johny Cash and that their meeting was recorded for the rest of us to enjoy ... even if it did take thirty years. Like fine wind, classic musoc only improves with age.i
We should probably thank the bone headed record executive who saw fit to shelve this masterpiece for laying it aside until a time when the album would be better received than it would have when it was recorded.
If you are a fan of country music or Johnny Cash, pick up a copy. You will not regret it!
The song choices are all great. The sense of humor rattles through a lot of the pieces, actually...I was thinking of the payoff on I told you who it was.... I think we all know it was DP. (Oh my.) The Minnie Pearl bit is priceless. And remember that this is the man who did a lot of humorous songs, including a dog and a deranged men with a silly name. Humor is the road to enlightenment.
Not to bore you. These are excellent songs, to a piece, and John Carter did a superior job of curating them. The voice is everything you'd want from Cash and more. If you listen to his slides down notes, amazing. Hitting the notes head on first off. Amazing. The gravitas of a man who's been to the underworld and resurfaced more or less intact, amazing. I don't think one song has sent as many chills down my spine as "She used to love me a lot." There is no better song about regret, ever, in the canon of popular music.
So when all is said and done, this is a must have record for any Cash fan, or anyone interested in how great storytelling songs, sung by a great storyteller, matter. And they do and will.
Oh. And the Costello remix is something that ought to be on some soundtrack, movie or TV, because it's got the eerie quality that makes for perfect titles. Somebody do this. And somebody do a total remix CD of Cash, a la Costello, because that voice can carry about anything you twist around it. Nobody else can do what Cash did to put trouble to mind to voice.
I miss you, Johnny and June. Wish we'd met. I'll always remember seeing you up close at the Pantages, and the nod Joe Strummer and I gave each other, coming in and out of the bar during the intermission. Everyone knew we were in the presence. And sitting right behind Tom Petty as he howled applause. It was magic. Memory matters.

Be sure to read the liner notes, written by his son John.
A great addition to the discs I have in my car - Johnny keeps me company on the road!
