Smoking on page one on a (nonetheless. scholastics book) geared toward young kids

I have an advanced young reader who is very interested in reading comics. He finishes books in what seems to be at the speed of light and I am always trying to catch up with buying new books. I saw Bones with so many good reviews with the scholastics stamp, read a little about it and bought it right away. What a shame for scholastics.I just came to buy the second book and happened to read some of the one star reviews and was horrified when I checked my version and found all those things. Page one starts with someone smoking and it does not get any better from there.
It seems like nowadays authors have mostly forgotten about writing good old fashion adventure and creative stories for kids. My choices are between pages filled with bathroom jokes, boys and girls who hate math and science and pranks and books like Bones with questionable materials.

Let me just say...I love this series. Currently I'm a 20 year old gal who used to read this when I was still in elementary school. For some reason last week this popped into my head and I had to buy it. I DO NOT REGRET THIS CHOICE AT ALL. When I was younger we had this beautiful library in my little town where I'd spend most of my time. It was a safe haven for me and even when I think about it to this day my heart yearns for that feeling again. I know it sounds dumb but I've always gravitated towards libraries and books. But this was the place I first found this series, so not only does the story line and art work bring back the nostalgia, but the feeling I had as a younger girl in the library floods back as well. Now that I'm older, it's really nice and humbling to be able to appreciate how much detail and precision went into the artwork and story line of this graphic novel. This is probably the only book I've read in a graphic novel format in my life, but I'd recommend it for anyone of any age group. Yes it does contain smoking and innuendos, but if I can read it in elementary school so can your kids.

My presumptions had me starting off in "meh" mode, but after reading a bit I couldn't help but think about the characters and then want to return to them. There is an innocence to them that is endearing, which even applies to Phoney Bone. Before I'd finished this one I'd ordered the second and am looking forward to the continuing adventures.

A friend mentioned that this was her favorite comic. I had not previously heard of Bone, but I have been reading more comics lately and it is hard not to be intruigued by Bone.

Three young "bones" from Boneville: Fone Bone, and his two cousins, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone go on an epic adventure. In addition to the Bones there are rat creatures, dragons, and lots of interesting creatures...and who knows what else since I've only read through book one?!

I was tempted to just buy the Bone: The Complete Cartoon Epic in One Volume , but let's face it... a large part of why you buy a comic is to enjoy the artwork. It worried me to see that people complained that while the story itself was great and they were glad to have it in one volume, it was a cheaper quality product. This is why I bought the first book as a test. I bought a used copy to save some money, and as I read I asked myself if I would be as drawn in if it were in black and white or on thin paper. On the story alone, I would say yes. But I do feel like it wouldn't have as much impact... like watching your favorite movie muted with subtitles. You know how each word feels, but you strain a little to grasp it.

So, I just ordered the rest of the series, some used, some new...and I can't wait to see where their adventure goes next.

The book act is vibrant with lots of details to the characters (human and other) as well as they scenery around them.

I just want to add my "thumbs up" to all the reviews here. If you haven't read this series, here's where to start. With similarities to "Cerebus" and "Pogo", "Bone" has heart and soul all its own.
The lead character, "Fone Bone" exhibits the full range of human emotions. He gets frightened at times, but keeps on going; he gets infatuated, he is loyal, he is ironic...what I am trying to say is that he brings concrete reality to his cartoon body. The stories are clever page-turners, filled with action, tension and wonderful humor.
I can't imagine this going out of print, but in the comics industry you never know, so I recommend buying "Out from Boneville". I betcha can't read just this one...

I love this series and I used to have all the books as a kid until I stupidly sold them for $2 per book. As a kid that’s a lot of money but looking back I wish I had kept them. But I’m glad I was able to find them here. Honestly this series is what got me into reading. I never liked reading until it read Bone. Although it’s a comic book it got me into reading novels. I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone, kid or adult for a fun and adventurous read. The writing really makes the different characters voices come to life and wow I just love these books. So nostalgic and just as I remember. Can’t wait to finish book 1 so I can start the rest of the books.
