As a previous foster parent and one who has experienced the untruthful dealings of our local Children's Protective Services, I can't recommend this book enough. As another review noted - I used to think that all parents (or at least the majority of them) involved with CPS were guilty of at least something. Experience has taught me that this is so far from the truth. These type of books should be given to all parents in the hospital as they are leaving w/ their newborns. Think it can't happen to you because you're not abusing your children? Read on and realize that the majority of cases where children are taken from their parents are not due to a criminal abuse issue. SO VERY SAD.

As a former foster parent for 12 years, I've seen sad cases where a child must be removed from its birth family for its own protection. But this excellent read from investigative reporter Brenda Scott shows the other side of the coin: how some social workers from CPS over-react & remove children for weak suspicions of abuse/neglect, and how vindictive neighbors or ex-spouses use the anonymous hotlines to report innocent families simply for "revenge."

Recently, I researched these kinds of books and wished I'd read this one first. Ms. Scott has taken a difficult subject and offered a thorough, intelligent and well written book. It is an absolute MUST READ for all parents, especially ones unfortunate enough to be wrongly accused and caught in the web of child-'savers'.

I read Richard Wexler's book first, and it appears to me that the author of this book did as well. Parts of the organization of the text are so similar, and even the wording of certain paragraphs make me think that if I were Wexler, I might have some issues. Otherwise the book is well written for the first half. Then it takes a turn to a strongly religious themed treatise. Not that there is no place for God in social work, but the perpetrators of many of the transgressions cited in the book are equally apt to attribute their actions to following the edicts of Christianity. As in so many areas of life, God appears to be on both sides, or is alleged to be by the actors. If you are in the market, stick with Wexler's book which covers the same territory with the pragmatism of a social scientist and without any dogma. That said, I am happy that Scott chose to write about this subject as it contributes to the overall amount of attention that can be brought to bear on the unchecked power of people intent on doing good, but who lack the skills, knowledge, and good judgement of someone worthy of this investment of authority.

Some good information. Some personal stories, but if you are looking for a book, you likely have your own story already.

This is stories of personal accounts with a few regulations and suggestions for dealing with CPS. I will be buying the book that is given to CPS workers($30-40) as instructions. I think that when it comes to dealing with any government agency, knowledge is power. I just wish I could find one for the IRS(this is why I have a CPA)

It couldn't happen to me. It won't happen to me because I do not abuse my children. These are the very thoughts that I had running through my mind until the day they drove away with my two girls and it started our battle with CD (Children's Division). It can happen and does happen, and your could be next. I have been accused of spreading fear but we as parents in America need to take a somber look at who is looking out for our children. Things need to change.

The book is great and more people should know what these so called Child Protective Services are doing. They are a money making machine that harms children.
