About the Author
Erynn Newman is a pastor’s kid, raised in churches all over the Eastern Seaboard. As a little girl, she created rich fantasy worlds and imaginary friends that followed her into adulthood, when she realized that meant she was either a crazy person or a writer—or maybe both. Out of Darkness was born as she wandered the cobblestone streets of Europe during a semester abroad.
Since earning her degree in Christian Studies, she has traveled the world and served as a missionary, a counselor, an ESL teacher, and a nanny. Though she has never worked with the CIA, her DVR contains a veritable Who’s Who of international spies.
She is passionate about God’s glory and storytelling, and is blessed to be able to use one to accomplish the other. She is a Carolina girl, a wife, and Mama to a very busy little boy, two cats, and a gaggle of characters that live inside her head.

You could read Out of Darkness as a stand-alone, but to feel the full impact of the opening of the novel, you really need to read First Light first. Elisabeth and Drew have the kind of personalities and relationship that light up the page—the combination of banter, friendship, and a deep love that is so enjoyable to witness—but by the end of the first chapter, it’s gone. Only the reader has the benefit of knowing what has really happened to Drew, and it’s not a pretty picture.
As in First Light, Erynn Newman did a wonderful job of conveying both the passing of time and the development of her characters across that time in well chosen scenes. I particularly loved the way in which Elisabeth’s faith became a beacon to Gabe following Drew’s ‘death’. He was already swoon-worthy material, but his eventual acceptance of Christ brings a maturity to him that totally seals the deal! And the way he handles everything . . . oh, my heart ached for him. Hero with a capital H. Please, can we have more of Gabe?!
As wonderful as Drew and Elisabeth’s reunion is, the three years they were apart have altered them both, and there are personal things they must work through in their relationship while they’re trying to stay under the radar and work out who was behind Drew’s ‘death’. It all makes for a compelling story, and the vitality in Newman’s writing and characterization brings it all to life. You can’t help but want to spend more time with these characters.
I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.
The prequel novelette was amazing and a great transition to "Out of Darkness," which is a fast paced romantic suspense novel that engages, rather ensnares the read right off the bat.
Drew and Elisabeth have known each other since they were in their early teens...getting married was a no brainer. The fact that his proposal was delayed by several years due to his father's death on 9/11 and the rage which consumed Drew and made him run. He eventually found his way back. Hence, the wonderful wedding they had both looked so forward to and truly enjoyed. Their love for one another a radiant blessing for all around and the envy of those who had not yet found it. The honeymoon...yea. That. Well it never really happened. Drew was killed in the limo that was to take them both away. Elisabeth: a wife and a widow in one day. The one friend who carries her through her darkest days: Drew CIA partner and the best friend to the couple, Gabe. But as things go, over time, and over years, feelings change. And a few days after Gabe proposes to Elisabeth, as she is trying to figure out her heart and how to fill the whole of her true love, he calls. He isn't dead...but someone has set it up really well so that he has to remain dead in the eyes of most people. Will he, with the help of Gabe and a few others, be able to figure out why he was kidnapped, how the kidnappers plan on using this potential biological weapon, and who inside the CIA or other agencies is helping them?
A powerful, unpredictable, and heart wrenching novel that is full of love, trust, honor, the humor of a little pixie with amazing blond curls, the true bond of family (blood and otherwise), partnership (and what that truly means), and an intricate plot that will keep you turning the page long after you keep saying "just one more chapter."
At times a tear jerker, at times humorous, at times moving, at times just the general everyday relations and get together of everyone, and at times romantic (but nothing too sappy and all clean and sweet and fitting). The love and reverence to God is a part of each character's personality to one degree or another; never preachy and mainly just thoughts the characters have during different scenarios and instances.
Erynn Newman has outdone herself with this debut novel. She has found a way to weave so many varied, interesting, and complex story lines throughout this novel without dropping any or taking away from any of them and at the very end of the novel, brings them all together seamlessly. Her characters are very human and relatable. You will fall in love with them all and root for each one at different times and for different reasons. You will see their flaws and strengths, when they doubt themselves and when they are sure, when they are needing support and when they are able to provide support.
I would recommend this novel to anyone who loves suspense novels with some romance and reality thrown in.
**I was introduced to this author via Celebrate Lit and bought a copy of her novel before reading, although I was provided an advanced readers copy of this novel, it was never used and has been deleted.
